21st Annual Volleyball Championship Day 1 Results

SIAC Volleyball Day 1 Recap

The 21st Annual SIAC Volleyball Champion was filled with expected wins and domination in those wins.  No major upsets occurred, however only 1 team scored points in a loss.  The day started out with a opening round game featuring the six time SIAC Volleyball Tournament Champion, Albany State and ended with a dominate victory by the team that finished 2nd in last year’s volleyball championship Fort Valley State.

In the first match of the day, six time defending champion Albany State dismantled the #4 seed in the west 3-0.  ASU struggled in the first game of the match allowing 23 points to Miles to take the victory 30-23.  In the second and third games, ASU took care of business scoring at will and winning 30-16, 30-17 respectively.  Leading the way for ASU was Latrice Lewis and Rachell Anderson who had double figures in Kills (14,11 respectively) and only had three errors between the two.  Chanel Wilson of ASU added to the victory with four serving aces.  ASU will advance to play Clark Atlanta as Miles will move to the Loser’s Bracket.

Benedict College took care of business dominating their match versus Tuskegee defeating them 3-0 in a very quick matter.  Benedict took the games 30-14, 30-22, 30-16.  Melinda Bastian and Natasha Gray of Benedict, both had game highs with 11 kills.  Gray also had 4 Digs.  Camilla Miller added 11 digs for the victory for BC.  Benedict as a team held TU to just 12 kills between all three games.  BC advance and play Stillman in the 2nd round, while Tuskegee will fall to the Loser’s Bracket.

Rounding out the Play -In games for the day was a quick dismantling of Lane 3-0 with relatively ease by LOC.   LC played tough in the first game losing just 30-25 but in the subsequent games attrition set in. LC faded in the second game 30-13 and gave up in the third game losing 30-5.  Lane was held to just nine total kills for the game scoring 0 in the 2nd or 3rd games.  LOC was led by LLuna Teckle who had 6 serving aces, 4 digs and 11 sets.  Tristan Parker had 7 kills.  LeMoyne Owen advances to play a tough Fort Valley State team while Lane falls to the Loser’s Bracket.

#1 W (Kentucky State)  3              #5 E (Paine)        0

The host of the Tournament Kentucky State brought the crowd and took home a convincing win over a perennial Volleyball powerhouse Paine College who are in the mist of a rebuilding year.  Kentucky State dominated winning in convincing fashion 3 games to nothing (30-20, 30-12, 30-14).  Kentucky State was led by Denae Shelton how had 13 Kills.  2nd Team All conference setter Etienne Bouie had 30 Set Aces and 5 digs in the victory.  The lone bright spot for Paine was Marquita Josey who had 6 kills.  KSU will advance to play the winner of Game #5 while Paine will try and recoup and get their wits about them as they advance to the Loser’s Bracket.

#3 E (Albany State)         3              #2 E (Clark Atlanta)         2

The east supreme met for an early match up as the #2 team in the east (Clark Atlanta) couldn’t overcome an early 2-0 lead to the eventual winner #3 Albany State in a classic battle.  ASU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead winning the first two games 30-27 and 30-23.  Clark Atlanta would then take over taking the next two games 30-27 and 30-24.  With the match now tied 2-2, the two teams would go to the decisive fifth game with a lot on the line.  ASU would pull out the victory 15-13 behind the play of 1st Team All Conference Rachell Anderson who had 20 kills and 5 digs.  4 ASU players had double digit kills including Shawanna Hill (14), Latrice Lewis (20) and Bonnie Salary (13).   CAU also had 4 players with double digit kills including the nation’s leader in blocks Maegan Thompkins who had 14 kills and 4 blocks.  ASU will advance to play Kentucky State in the Quarter Finals tomorrow while CAU moves to the Loser’s Bracket.

#2 W (Stillman)                                0              #4 E (Benedict)                 3

Benedict wasted no time of showing the western team of Stillman that the best volleyball in the SIAC is in the East as they defeated SC 3-0.  BC won the three games 30-24, 30-14, 30-19.  Melinda Bastain dominated for BC with 12 Digs, 4 Serving Aces, 4 Digs and 1 Block.  Natasha Gray for BC had another solid game with 8 kills and 9 digs.  SC played hard behind the play of Jasmine Leatherwood with 15 digs and 14 digs Anjelica Nixon.  BC advances to the Quarterfinals and will face the winner of game 7 while Stillman will move to the Loser’s Bracket.

#5 W (LeMoyne-Owen)                   0           #1 E (Fort Valley State) 3

In today’s last action of the day, Fort Valley State used their entire roster to defeat LOC 3-0 in the quickest and easiest game so far for the tournament.  FVSU won all games 30-11, 30-11, 30-5.  FVSU allowed just nine kills but all but 3 players for FVSU had at least 6 Kills (A total of 6 players).  Latoya Reeves the SIAC MVP led the way with 8 Kills and 4 Set Aces, she also had 3 digs.  Raven Wynn also pitched in with 7 kills.  FVSU totally dominated and will play Benedict tomorrow at 2:00 pm.
