SIAC Women’s Basketball Action Recap Jan. 19-21, 2008
The Women’s SIAC recap includes Fort Valley State continuing their winning ways defeating Benedict and Albany State continuing a winning streak winning 7 of their last eight games including a big victory over Paine on the road. LeMoyne-Owen took a victory over Stillman but fell short against Tuskegee. Arch Rivals Miles and Stillman nearly went to overtime but Miles prevailed late. And the Clark Atlanta vs. Kentucky State game and Miles vs. Tuskegee were cancelled due to the snow storm that came through Georgia and Alabama on Saturday. Sylbrena Johnson of Stillman (left) had a stellar weekend despite two losses.
LeMoyne-Owen 69 Stillman 57 Boxscore
TUSCALOOSA, Ala.—The Saturday afternoon double-header against conference foe Lemoyne-Owen proved to be a difficult bill for Stillman’s men and women basketball teams. Poor second-half shooting was the prevailing Achilles heel for both teams as the Lady Tigers were handed a 69-57 loss, the women dropped to (2-8, 2-5 SIAC).
The Lady Tigers were one again led by All-SIAC forward Bianca Burton, whose 13 points and 16 rebounds (her ninth consecutive double-double) would still to be enough to stave-off the team’s second straight defeat. Stillman guard Sylbrena Johnson led all scorers with 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field. The Lady Tigers shot just 30 percent from the field in the second half, well below the 65 percent on 13-of-20 shooting by LOC.
LOC outscored the Lady Tigers 40-28 in the second-half after the two teams were knotted at 29 at halftime. Sophomore forward Tiffany McGhee was the only other Stillman player to reach double-figures as she finished with 11 points and five rebounds.
Fort Valley State 69 Benedict 55 Boxscore
The Benedict Lady Tigers fell 14 points shy of a win against Fort Valley Wildcats on Saturday, January 19, 2008 in the Benjamin E. Mays Arena. Nadia Fleming led the offensive attack with 16 points and controlled the boards with 13 rebounds. Latoya Brathwhite added 10 points and 6 rebounds however it would not be enough to stop the Wildcats of Fort valley State. At the half, the score was 29-35 with Fort Valley in the lead by 6 points. At the close of the game the lady Tigers concluded a 36 percentage shooting rate and turned the ball over 28 times. KaDeidra Freeland led the Wildcats with 18 points and three rebounds.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.—The Stillman Lady Tigers couldn’t hold on to a 13 point halftime lead and fell to the Lady Bears 57-52. Guard Sylbrena Johnson showed brilliance for the Lady Tigers early-on, scorching the Lady Bears for 16 first-half points on 6-of-6 shooting from the field.
Johnson led all scorers with 24 points and eight rebounds. Senior forward Bianca Burton contributed with 14 rebounds, but recorded her least productive offensive performance, scoring just 6 points in the ballgame on 2-of-11 shooting.
The loss drops Stillman to (2-9, 2-6 SIAC).
