KSU Basketball Legend Inducted into Georgia Hall of Fame
Frankfort, KY – Elmore Smith, a legend in Kentucky State University basketball folk lore has been inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2008.
Smith is a native of Macon, GA where he played basketball at Ballard-Hudson High School. He went on to lead Kentucky State University to two NAIA National championships in 1970 and 1971. Smith holds KSU rebound average records for both single in a season (24.2 per game) and career (22.6 per game) rebound averages. Smith or “The Big E”, as he was referred to on campus, received All-American honors in both 1970 and 1971 even though he passed up his senior year in favor of a professional contract. He played 562 games in the NBA averaging 14 points per game and 11 rebounds per game. He still holds the NBA record for most blocked shots in a game with 17. This record has stood for almost 35 years. This Thorobred has made a lasting impression on the NBA, KSU and high school basketball in Georgia. Kentucky State University, the SIAC and all that Elmore Smith has touched salute his accomplishments on and off the court.
