Tuskegee Football Reloads adding 31 Recruits on National Signing Day
TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY, AL – Head coach Willie Slater of Tuskegee University added 31 new members to the Golden Tigers’ football squad today.
Twenty-five seniors and 6 junior college transfers are set to join the Golden Tigers for the 2008 football season. The newest players signed their letters of intent on Feb. 6, the NCAA’s National Signing Day.
Among the members of the first-day signing class are 7 defensive backs, 4 quarterbacks, 1 running back, 14 offensive linemen, 7 defensive linemen, a linebacker, a wide receiver and 2 tight ends.
”The coaching staff did a great job and I think we signed some good players that will help us down the road,” Slater said.
Two Alabama Sports Writers Association Super 12 all-state players highlight the class; quarterback Jeremy Williams (6-0, 190) of Central Tuscaloosa and runningback Anthony Landrum of Sweet Water. Williams was the Class 4A Back of the Year. He guided Central to the Class 4A state championship and was named MVP in the championship game. He passed for 2,840 yards and 34 touchdowns and rushed for 557 yards and 15 more touchdowns on the ground as a senior. Anthony Landrum propelled Sweet Water to the Class 1A state championship and was voted MVP in the championship game. He finished his 14-game senior year by rushing for 2,104 yards and 39 touchdowns.
Coach Slater inked 17 linemen to beef up the offensive and defensive fronts. With the lost of three key offensive linemen from the 2007 championship team (Anthony Driver, Larry Peoples and Kevin Jones), a bevy of prospects were signed.
The Golden Tigers finished the 2007 season undefeated (12-0), winning the SIAC Championship and the HBCU National Championship. Returning at QB will be SBN All-American and SIAC Player of the Year Jacary Atkinson, who passed for nearly 3,000 yards and 34 touchdowns as a junior.
