2007-08 Men’s & Women’s Basketball All Conference, All Academic & Superlatives

The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Coaches committee is pleased to announce the 2007-08 SIAC All Conference, All Academic Teams and Superlatives. Leading the way for this year’s awards is Crystal Benton, of Tuskegee University, who took home First Team All Conference honors, MVP of the Year, and led her team to a first place finish in the SIAC. Kenny Jones of Kentucky State put up impressive stats this season and took home First Team honors along with the MVP of the year award.On the Women’s side Alicia Barnes (Tuskegee), Jessica Vaughn (Kentucky State), took home All Academic honors with at least a 3.64 GPA. Tuskegee’s head coach Belinda Roby took home the Coach of the Year honors. Fort Valley State finished second this year, largely impart by Tekesha Riggs, who makes her second consecutive appearance on the All Conference First Team, and Kadeidra Freeland, who took home Freshman of the Year honors. Shantrell Moss of Clark Atlanta sparked the Lady Panthers all season long leading to her First Team honors. Nikia Trice led ASU on the longest streak by any team this season and made first team, while Aisha Johnson helped the MVP Benton led Tuskegee to the best finish in the SIAC.

Big men dominated the SIAC All Conference team with three players being taller than 6’6. Newcomer Rasul Buulu led LeMoyne-Owen to a second place finish in the SIAC. Morehouse’s Kenney Boyd dominated the post all year long and took home first team honors as well. Flawaan Flaggs of Miles led the SIAC in scoring despite only starting two games this season and Scheraun King of Albany State rounds out the little men that made the first team. LeMoyne-Owen’s head coach Edward Newton led his team to a 2nd place finish in the SIAC while taking home Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive season despite taking over for Legendary Coach Smokey Gaines during the middle of the season.

Student Athletes receiving All Conference, All Academic, and Superlative honors were recognized during the SIAC Banquet, March 4, 2008 at 7:00 pm at the Harbert Center. Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford addressed the crowd and really hit home with his message to the student athletes.

All the SIAC teams will be in action beginning March 5-9, 2008 at Fair Park Arena in Birmingham, AL. Tickets are still available.

    this is a graet list of guys but it is a shame that benedict’s Martines Woody who led the nation in blocks per games and was one of the conferece top rebouders did not receive any recognition.

    Great Job Tuskegee!! I will also like to give a shout out to Danielle Walker from Clark Atlanta University… for doing it Big! Be patient big things are forthcoming. Ms Johnson is proud of you and so happy to see you ladies representing Westlake High School.
