#8 Paine College 62 #9 Lane College 59 Game #1
The first game of the SIAC 75th Annual Basketball Tournament started out with a nail bitter as the #8 seed Paine College defeated Lane the #9 seed 62-59. Paine took a big lead into halftime leading of 38-29. Both teams shot the ball well in the first half with Paine shooting 40% and Lane 37.9% but Lane fell behind after going 0-6 from the 3 point line. In the second half Lane cut into the lead and outscored Paine 30-24; however, Paine came through in the end with unique ball handling and running the clock down to take the victory. Paine was led by #42 Latoya Ashley who scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Paine advances to the quarter finals to take on the #1 seed Tuskegee at 1:00 pm on Thursday.
Men
#6 Paine College 73 #11 Lane College 65 Game #1
Seemingly a double header in Augusta, GA with Paine playing Lane once again this time with a men’s twist, but still had the same result as the women’s game earlier with Paine College prevailing 73-65. Paine jumped out to an early lead, leading at one point by 17 points, but that lead didn’t last long as Lane would rally to within two points late in the game. Paine took a 45-32 lead into the half and kept the scoring success going into the second half or at least the first few minutes of the game. After shooting 51.5% in the first half Paine would go ice cold shooting just 23.1% in the second half. This lack of offensive conversions allowed Lane to get back into the game and with just one minute to go in the game found themselves down just 62-65. Late free throws allowed Paine to survive and advance to the quarter finals. Paine was led by Joshua Adams and Jason Smalls. Adams scored 17 points to lead all scorers while Smalls added 13 points and 14 rebounds. Paine will play the #3 seed Fort Valley State on Friday at 2:00 pm.
