Game #3 Golden Rams of Albany State Romp Past Thorobreds of Kentucky State

The Golden Rams of Albany State University made a demonstrative statement in their first round win over the Thorobreds of Kentucky State University in the 75th Annual SIAC Men’s Basketball Tournament. With five players scoring in double figures and first and second half shooting percentages of 50% or better, the 9th seeded Rams played two solid halves of basketball on their way to a 91-77 win over Kentucky State.

Leading by 20 points at halftime, the Rams shot 54.8% (17 of 31) from the floor in the first half. The Rams also converted on 13 of 21 free throw shots in the first half.
As reflected by the deficit at intermission, the Thorobreds got a slow start out of the gate. Shooting just 21.6% (8 of 37) from the floor, the Thorobreds trailed at halftime, 50-30.

While the Thorobreds had a better second half of scoring, the Golden Rams maintained their impressive pace from the first half. The Thorobreds shot 41.2% (14 of 34) in the second half and scored a total of 41 points. However, the increased production by the Thorobreds was not enough to overtake the front running Golden Rams. Albany State shot an even 50% from the floor in the final 20 minutes of the game converting on 14 of 34 shots. The 47 point second half enabled the Rams to extend their lead.

The Ram’s James Clark finished with a game high 23 points while Scheraun King (All-SIAC First Team) had 18 points and 13 rebounds. Tyrone Evans finished with 13 points, Jerrell Emory contributed 12 points and Jamell Ellerbe had 10 points in the Ram win.

The Thorobreds were led in scoring by the SIAC’s Most Valuable Player, Kenny Jones who finished with 22 points.

The Golden Rams of Albany State now advance to the quarterfinal round with a Thursday (March 6th), 3 p.m. match up with the number one ranked Tigers of Benedict College in Birmingham, Alabama at Fair Park Arena.
Game #4 Lady Tigers of Stillman Bounce Benedict’s Lady Tigers

A balanced scoring attack was the key to a first round win in the 30th Annual Women’s SIAC Basketball Tournament for the Lady Tigers of Stillman College over the Lady Tigers of Benedict College. Three Stillman College players scored in double figures in the 59-42 win.

In the first half of play, the statistics for each team were fairly similar. Benedict College went 11 of 30 from the floor (36.7%) while Stillman was 11 of 29 (37.9%). With each team connecting on only one three point shot in the first twenty minutes, the Lady Tigers of Benedict College took a lead into the intermission by converting five of six free throw opportunities. At halftime, Benedict led, 28-23.

In the second half, momentum and the shooting percentages favored the Lady Tigers of Stillman. The team shot a blistering 54.2% in the second half, converting on 13 of 24 shots. Conversely, the Lady Tigers of Benedict had considerable difficulty from the floor. Benedict managed only five field goals in the second half (5 of 24). The disappointing 20.8% field goal percentage and the 14 point total in the second half spelled doom for the Lady Tigers. The 36 point second half performance by Stillman College was more than enough to overcome their five point halftime deficit.

Sylbrena Johnson and Bianca Burton had 17 points each in the Stillman victory. Tiffany McGhee added 16 points and nine rebounds as the Lady Tigers now advance to the quarterfinal round of the SIAC Tournament where they will meet the number two seed Lady Tigers of Fort Valley State University on Friday, March 7, 2008 at 12 noon in the Fair Park Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.

  1. FAN Says:

Did Paine or Lane College play in tournament on day 1 ? If so, it would have been real nice for your staff to have at least acknowledge each team for participating in your event.. This probably speaks to the reason why the USA today listed only one game from the SIAC Tournament…. “VERY UNPROFESSIONAL” ON YOUR BEHALF…………..
