Paine captures SIAC Golf Championship

Championship day of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference SIAC Golf Championship concluded with Paine College taking home the 1st championship since 1980. Coach Fred Watson was named Coach of the Year along with freshman sensation Sean Lucas who was named to the All Tournament, All Academic, All Conference and Freshman of the Year en route to leading Paine to the championship. Paine started the day with just a 13 stroke lead over Morehouse but fatigue set in on a tough course at Flint River Golf Course in Albany, GA leading to Paine shooting a 326 to take the victory and Morehouse shooting a 334 winding up in 2nd place. Kentucky State finished in the day shooting a 340 to finish in third while Benedict posted a 350 to finish in 4th place.
Phillip Allen of Morehouse College who lead the field all week long in scoring took home the honor of Tournament MVP after shooting a 73, 74, and 80 respectively over the course of the week. Allen outshot Daniel Augustas of Paine College by one stroke to take home the MVP honors. Augustas, Allen, Olajuwon Ajanaku of Benedict, Sean Lucas of Paine, Nick Morrow of Kentucky State and Antonio Ward of Morehouse were named to the All Tournament Team.
Paine and the rest of the SIAC will compete at the 2008 PGA National Minority Collegiate Golf Championships in May. The win marks Paine first SIAC Golf Championship. Morehouse was the last champion in 1980. After a historic week, the SIAC is proud of the tournament results and would like to thank the city of Albany, Roy Snead, General Manager of the Flint River Golf Course, and the entire recreation department of Albany, GA for their hospitality.

Way to go Paine. Big ups to my nephew Sean Lucas, job very well done. Pray and follow your dreams, he is proof that they do indeed come true.
