Ed Williams signs with Tennessee Titans

williams_mug.jpgThe Tennessee Titans have signed rookie free agent Ed Williams. Ed Williams’s contract was undisclosed but he signed on Monday, April 28 just one day removed from the NFL Draft weekend. Williams becomes the fourth Lane College football player to be chosen by the National Football League. Former teammate and current Houston Texan WR Jacoby Jones, was drafted in the third round (73rd overall) in 2007 and DT Ernest Bonwell, was an 11th round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 1971. Fred Lane, like Ed Williams, was a free agent signee in 1997.

Williams, who played for Lane College, dominated the ranks of wide receiver over the past three seasons in the SIAC along side former teammate and current Houston Texan Jacoby Jones. In 26 games at Lane College, Williams started 24 contests. He snared 110 passes for 1,608 yards (14.62-yard average) and 13 touchdowns. He gained one yard on three reverses and was credited with four solo tackles.

The 6’4, 206 lb pro-to-type receiver has been compared to Muhsin Muhammad of the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears for his big frame, speed and ability to catch the ball in small spaces. Williams will vie to be one of the weapons of Titans QB Vince Young and will compete for the slot receiver spot, transition to an H-Back or possibly see time at tight end. Other teams that sought Williams’s services include the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars.
