Brian Witherspoon & Terrance Stringer added to NFL
Brian Witherspoon of Stillman College and Terrance Stringer of Tuskegee University are added to the list of NFL hopefuls. Witherspoon signed an undisclosed deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Stringer has verbally agreed to a deal with the New York Giants but has not signed an official deal as of yet. Witherspoon posted the fastest time of all the NFL draft hopefuls in the 40 yard dash with a time of 4.29. Stringer anchored the HBCU National Champion Tuskegee University Golden Tigers to back to back SIAC titles and an undefeated season in 2007.
Brian Witherspoon, a 5′10, speedy, cornerback from Butler, AL wowed the NFL scouts during his Pro Day at the University of Alabama prior to the draft. Spoon, as he is commonly known, ran a 4.29 in the 40 yard dash and some reports even have his time as low as 4.22. Brian led the defensive unit of Stillman College with 73 tackles and 8 INTs in 33 games. He also recorded touchdowns on special teams including a punt return on senior day this year. A 2008 preseason All-America choice, Witherspoon helped Stillman to a 7-4 record and a fourth place finish in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference final standings.
“I’m upset that I didn’t get drafted, but I’m glad I ended up with Jacksonville,” Witherspoon said. “There was a lot of interest from other teams throughout the entire draft, but Jacksonville presented the best chance for me to start because they want me mainly on special teams.” “I just wanted the best opportunity to play.”
The return specialist went into this year’s draft projected as high as a 5th round pick and the highest rated defensive back from a Division II school. Witherspoon’s services will mainly be used on special teams and may see some time at nickel back. Jaguars.com senior editor Vic Ketchman, when asked about Brian Witherspoon, stated “he’s pure speed and made a lot of visits to teams prior to the draft.
He’s a plum signing by the Jaguars.”
Terrance Stringer, a 6′3, 213 lb, senior free safety from Smiths, AL anchored the record setting SIAC Champion and HBCU National Champion Tuskegee University Golden Tigers to an undefeated season in 2007. Stringer, had 41 tackles and three pass break ups in the 2007 season. Stringer also went undrafted, but agreed verbally to a contract with the New York Football Giants. Stringer will look to make an impact on special teams.
