NCAA DII Outdoor Regional Track & Field Championship Recaps

Morehouse College hosted the NCAA Division II South Region Track & Field Championships on Saturday, May 3.  Edwin Moses Track at B.T. Harvey Stadium featured athletes from the SIAC, Atlantic Sun, Sunshine State conference and several independent schools all vying for the opportunity to qualify for the Division II National Championships in Mount Sac, CA, May 22-24.  Albany State men and Women dominated the field of 14 colleges from around the region with the ASU men taking home the meet victory.

Estella Moore led the charge for the Albany State women who finished in 3rd place scoring 122 points.  ASU dominated the sprinting events finishing in 1st in the 100m, 200m, 400m 800m, 100m HH, and 4×100m relay.  Moore finished in 1st place in both the 100m and 200m and ran a leg on the 4×100m relay team.  She provisionally qualified in the 100m and 200m, running a time of 11.83 and 24.49 respectively.  Other 1st place finishers for Albany State include Roxie Griffin in the 400m (56.12-provisional qualifier), Robin Branch-Thomas in the 800m (2:15.74) and Shaneka Birdsong in the 100m HH (14.65).  Candice Camp took home a first place finish in the triple jump provisionally qualifying with a jump of 12.19m.  Albany State finished in 3rd place in the meet, Fort Valley State and Kentucky State finished in 6th, and Clark Atlanta finished in 10th.

For the Men, Albany State finished in first ironically scoring the same number of points as the women’s team (122).  ASU men’s team also dominated the sprinting events just nipping out the host Morehouse College who finished in 2nd place with 118 points.  ASU was led by Rodney Coley who won 100m and 200m provisionally qualifying in both.  In the 100m Jeffrey Mosley of Fort Valley State, and Jamaree Gordon of Kentucky State also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Nationals.  The Albany State 4×100m relay ran a 40.09 to automatically qualify for the NCAA nationals defeating the rest of the field by nearly an entire second.  Other SIAC 1st place finishers include, Ronnie McGirt of Albany State taking home 1st place in the 110 HH (14.86) and High Jump (2.00m), Barry Batson in the Long Jump (6.78m), Dameon Terry in the Shot Put (13.32m) and Hammer Throw (43.98m) , William Jackson in the Discus (43.28m), and Eric McCray in the Javelin (48.68m).

Albany State finished in 1st, Morehouse finished in 2nd, Fort Valley State finished in 6th, Kentucky State in 7th, Benedict in 10th, Clark Atlanta in 12th and Stillman college in 14th.
