Miles jumps up early but falls late against Concordia 24-29

Miles dropped another tough game to Concordia College 24-29. After jumping out to a 17-0 lead, Concordia would rally and score 23 unanswered points to get the victory.

Miles would jump out to a 17-0 lead early in the first quarter. Justin Madison got the Golden Bears on the board first when he kicked a 27 yard field goal capping a nine play 64 yard drive. Later in the quarter Madison would intercept a Ken Johnson (Concordia) pass and return it for a 35 yard touchdown. Two minutes later in the first quarter Miles would force a punt and got the ball back on their 33 yard line. QB Chivas Jones, dropped back to pass and found Jonorzell Green. Green made a few moves and 62 yards later he found himself in the end zone for another Miles Touchdown.

Early in the second quarter Concordia would finally get on the board when Ken Johnson hit Chris Gooden for a 20 yard touchdown pass, the extra point was blocked and Concordia trailed 17-6.

Miles would answer a couple of series later when Jones hit Breante Allen for a 7 yard touchdown pass.

From that point on it was all Concordia, as they would score 23 unanswered points. With 1:54 remaining in the first half, Concordia would capitalize on good field position and would score on a one play 42 yard pass from Ken Johnson to Chris Gooden for his second touchdown of the day. Concordia would get the ball back with just 58 seconds remaining in the half. They would go 66 yards in 3 plays for the score when Ken Johnson hit Gooden again for thier third connection for a touchdown in the game. Miles would lead at the half 24-22.

The third and fourth quarter were pretty uneventful except for the final 3:00 minutes of the game. Concordia had the ball on Miles 40 yard line and down by two points. They would put together a seven play, time consuming drive before DeAngelo Suris lined up in the back of a stacked formation and plunged into the endzone to give Concordia a 29-24 lead with :41 seconds left in the game.

Miles would not score and suffer another heartbreaking loss that saw them take a big lead in the first half and then go scoreless in the second half.

Concordia out rushed Miles 236 to 41 and out gained MC 392 to 281 total yards.

QB Chivas Jones passed for 221 yards and two touchdowns on 14-26 passing. Jonorzell caught seven passes for 138 yards and added one 1 touchdown.

Ken Johnson, Concordia, hooked up with Chris Gooden for three touchdowns and 156 yards passing.

Four Miles defensive players had double digit tackles including Darryl Corley (13), Tobias Wilson (12), Corey Robinson (11), and James Mitchell (10). Wilson added three tackles for a loss and 2 sacks.

Miles will try and prepare for homecoming as they face Kentucky State next Saturday at 1:00 pm CST.
