Albany State
Albany State University is one of 35 units of the University System of Georgia. Albany State University is a comprehensive regional institution of higher learning whose mission is to provide a quality education. Established originally as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute and supported by private and religious organizations, Albany State University was founded in 1903, by Joseph Winthrop Holley to provide religious and manual training for African-American youths of Southwest Georgia. The mission was to train teachers to teach basic academic skills and to train in the trades and industries, with special emphasis on domestic science and art.
Today, Albany State University provides innovative instructional and professional programs through its five academic schools: Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences and the Graduate School. The University serves 24 counties in the Southwest Georgia area with graduate and undergraduate courses in more than 30 fields.
After the Great Flood of 1994, Gov. Zell Miller declared Albany State (College) University ‘unsinkable’ and pledged the state’s support to rebuild the 103-year-old campus bigger, stronger and better. An aggressive $140-million rebuilding plan was launched and seven new state-of-the-art facilities, including new dormitories, classrooms and laboratories, a dining hall, an athletic complex, energy plant and an administration building, were constructed. Several of the campus’ historic buildings, including Caroline Hall, Hazard Education Complex, Margaret Rood Hazard Library and Hattie Malone Infirmary Building, were demolished to make way for progress on the campus.
An all-new state-of-the-art stadium was opened in 2004, and new housing units opened in 2006. The pedestrian mall, designed to link the west ASU campus to the new east campus, reflects both ASU’s history and progress. Persons who use the mall will read “A Past to Cherish” as they walk west toward the historic campus and “A Future to Fulfill” as they walk east onto the new campus. Impressive periods of growth and development at the University have been guided by seven presidents: Joseph Winthrop Holley, D.D., LL.D. (1903-1943); Aaron Brown, Ph.D., LL.D., (1943-1954); Williams H. Dennis, LL.D. (1954-1965); Thomas Miller Jenkins, J.D., LL.D. (1965-1969); Charles L. Hayes, Ed.D. (1969-1980); Billy C. Black, Ph.D. (1980-1996); Portia Holmes Shields, Ph.D. (1996 - 2005) and Everette J. Freeman (Ed.D.).
