Benedict’s Gipson, Miles’ Melvin Headline SIAC Baseball Weekly Honors

Atlanta, GA—Benedict catcher/third baseman Brandon Gipson and Miles first baseman/pitcher Patrick Melvin have been named SIAC Baseball East Division and West Division Players of the Week, respectively, after their performances this week. Benedict junior Michael Jordan has been named SIAC Baseball East Division Player of the Week while Stillman pitcher Josh Cagle was named SIAC West Division Pitcher of the Week.

Gipson, a native of Detroit, MI, went 12-for-17, including two triples and two doubles, with a .705 batting average and a 1.058 slugging percentage in six games. The 6-5 senior had 13 RBIs and scored 10 runs with six stolen bases and a .772 on-base percentage. Defensively, Gipson had a .933 fielding percentage. He helped Benedict to a 4-2 record with a 9-4 win over Saint Augustine’s and a three-game series sweep over Clark Atlanta (12-2, 31-1,17-4), where he was 9-for-10 from the plate.
 
Melvin, a native of Trafford, AL, went 11-for-17 from the plate, including two doubles, with a .647 batting average and a .765 slugging percentage in five games. The 6-3 senior hit two RBIs with four runs scored. On the mound, Melvin pitched nine innings with seven strikeouts against Kentucky State to pick up the win. He helped the Golden Bears to a 4-1 record with a win against Concordia-Selma and a three-game series sweep over Kentucky State.
 
Jordan, a native of Miami, FL, pitched eight total innings with 15 strikeouts in two appearances. The 5-5 utility player was 1-0 for the week with a win against Clark Atlanta along with a 2.25 ERA.
 
Cagle pitched a complete game shutout with five strikeouts and no walks against conference and in-state rival Tuskegee. The Brookwood, AL native was 1-0 for the week with no earned runs; bringing his record to 2-2 for the season.
