Albany State University Wins 2011 SIAC SAAC Citizenship Award

Atlanta, GA--The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) recently awarded Albany State University the 2011 Student Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) Citizenship Award. Student-athletes from around the SIAC, through their S.A.A.C. programs, competed all year long to acquire points by completing community service projects and other initiatives on their campus and in their community.

“Our S.A.A.C. members and student-athletes have worked very hard this year in their community service and outreach endeavors,” said Stanley McCormick, S.A.A.C. Co-Advisor and Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Albany State University. “I am very proud of their efforts throughout the year. We finished in second place for the past three years, so we are excited about a first-place finish.”

Albany State received a perfect score to earn this year’s Citizenship Award. The Golden Rams S.A.A.C. program also raised $905.00 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“It was an honor working with the S.A.A.C programs this year. They have motivated and inspired our youth to be powers for good in the 21st century. I commend Albany State University for their efforts as well as the other S.A.A.C. programs in the SIAC and I look forward to working with them next year,” says SIAC Associate Commissioner/Director of Compliance and Senior Woman Administrator Tina Jones.

Each S.A.A.C. program received points in the following categories: public service; raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation; visits to hospitals, elementary schools, and nursing homes.

“We are pleased that Albany State’s SAAC was named the top program in the SIAC this year,” said Dr. Richard H. Williams, ASU’s Interim Director of Athletics. “Part of our mission at Albany State is providing service to our communities. Our student-athletes are to be commended for the commitment to public service and making our world a better place.”

Albany State University received their award last week during the 2011 SIAC General Assembly meeting in Atlanta, GA.
