Volleyball Championship: Day One Recap

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – Day one of the 2015 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) volleyball championship at the Birmingham Crossplex in Alabama concluded Wednesday evening with the quarterfinal matches.
 
MATCH 1
3E Clark Atlanta 3, 2E Tuskegee 2

Clark Atlanta upset second seeded Tuskegee in a thrilling five set match to open the tournament. All-SIAC first team honoree Cori Smith led all players with a match-high 26 kills along with seven digs to advance to the winner’s bracket. Sierra Scoggins added 13 kills for CAU while Kiara Govan finished with 45 assists. Tuskegee had three players finish with double-figure kills including Co-Player of the Year Pamela Allen (17), first team selection Jamiah Breda-Nixon (14), and Donovan Wingfield (14). Morgan Scrivens finished with a match-high 53 assists and Zahria Radford tallied 23 digs. CAU will face No. 1 Claflin, Thursday, Nov. 19 at 12 p.m. CT. Tuskegee will play No. 4 Stillman in an elimination match at 10 a.m. CT.
 
MATCH 2
2E Albany State 3, 3W Stillman 0

Albany State swept Stillman 3-0 and was led by Justice Howard who finished with 10 kills and hit .444 during the match. Tiffany Roesler added 29 assists and Kaliah Carter recorded 11 digs. First team pick Sheila Dailey led Stillman with 13 kills. Kendra Ramons finished with 20 assists. ASU takes on No. 1 Kentucky State at 12 p.m. on Thursday and Stillman plays No. 2 Tuskegee at 10 a.m.
 
MATCH 3
1E Claflin 3, 4W Miles 0

Top-seeded Clafin defeated Miles 3-0 in the third match of the tournament. Claflin performed well offensively and hit .377 as a team and .458 in the second set. Jamie Dobson tallied a team-leading 10 kills. Second team honoree Sonia Rosales added a match-high 38 assists. Kayls Ford finished with 10 assists for Miles while Alexus Moore led the offense with seven kills. Claflin meets No. 3 Clark Atlanta at 12 p.m. and Miles will play No. 4 Benedict in an elimination match at 10 a.m.
 
MATCH 4
1W Kentucky State 3, 4E Benedict 0

No. 1 Kentucky State finished the final game of the opening round with a 3-0 sweep over Benedict. KSU’s defense held Benedict to just 13 kills while its offense was led by second team honoree Tajhe Ochs, who finished with 10 kills. Setter of the Year Anjelique Kyle recorded 26 assists and Defensive Player of the Year Kiara Rivera added 13 digs. KSU will face No. 2 Albany State at 12 p.m. and Benedict will meet No. 4 Miles at 10 a.m.
