No. 5 Paine outlasts No. 4 Lane in overtime

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. 
No. 5 Paine defeated No. 4 Lane 80-78 in overtime in the opening game of the 2016 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Women’s Basketball Tournament, Monday afternoon at Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham, Ala.
 
Paine (10-18 overall) advanced to face top-seeded Benedict on Wednesday, March 2 at 1 p.m. in a quarterfinal matchup. The Lions placed three players in double-figures and was led by Ashley Watts who finished with 23 points and a game-high five assists. Janisha Wilkerson posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Chasity Mullins finished with 17 points and seven rebounds.


Tashara Jones led Lane with a career-high 37 points. Jones also finished with nine rebounds and four assists. Valerie Leland also recorded a double-double for the Dragons with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Dezarae McCoy led all players in rebounds with 14. Lane finished the 2015-16 season with an overall record of 5-22.
