No. 2 Miles advances with win over No. 7 Paine

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – No. 2 Miles escaped No. 7 Paine with an 82-73 win in an opening round game of the 2016 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Men’s Basketball Tournament, Tuesday evening at Bill Harris Arena.
 
Miles (17-12 overall) held a solid 35-26 lead at halftime but Paine (7-23) was able to gain a 52-47 lead with a 3-pointer by Kaderious Compton at the 10:06 mark. However, Miles was able to mount an 11-0 run to regain the lead, 58-52 with 7:14 remaining. The Golden Bears were able to maintain its lead for the remainder of the game to advance to Thursday’s quarterfinal matchup.
 
Maiscel Grier and Joshua Johnson each scored 16 points for Miles.  Johnson led Miles in rebounds (nine) and assists (five). Reginald Smalls (14) and Haisan Bunnell (11) also recorded double-figures in scoring.

Paine was led by Rahiem Connelly and Christian Nobles who recorded 14 points a piece. Donald Quarles finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. Arnold Okechukwu also added 10 points and six rebounds.

Miles will take on No. 3 Claflin on Thursday, March 3 at 3:15 p.m.
