Hot start propels No. 3 Claflin over No. 6 LeMoyne-Owen

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – No. 3 Claflin had a hot start in the opening half which helped it advance to the 2016 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Women’s Basketball Tournament quarterfinals with a 56-47 win over No. 6 LeMoyne-Owen, Tuesday morning at Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham, Ala.
 
The Lady Panthers improved to 17-10 on the season and were led by Carnique Marks’ 20 points and 11 rebounds. Marks scored 11 of her points in the first half where the Panthers took their largest lead 27-9, with a jumper by Ashley Fields at the 3:38 mark in the second quarter.

 The Magicians (7-19) found their rhythm late in the second half and cut Claflin’s lead to 51-44 with 18 seconds to play. Crystal Shields led LeMoyne-Owen in rebounds (10) and also had 11 points. Ashley Seaton finished with a team-high 14 points.
