No. 4 LeMoyne-Owen upsets No. 1 Benedict

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
No. 4 LeMoyne-Owen erased a 12-point halftime deficit and upset No. 1 Benedict in the 2016 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Men’s Basketball Tournament quarterfinals, Wednesday afternoon at Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham, Ala.
 
The Magicians (15-14) trailed 40-28 at halftime but used several runs throughout the second half to chip away at the Tigers’ lead. Dontarion Wright gave LeMoyne-Owen its first lead of the half, 50-48 at the 11:15 mark with a layup from Justin Street. After exchanging baskets, Rashawn Brown connected on a 3-pointer to give the Magicians a 55-52 lead which they held for the duration of the game.
 
Brown led LeMoyne-Owen with a game-high 24 points and seven rebounds. Street recorded 22 points and eight rebounds. Jerry Hampton led all players in rebounds (10) and finished with 10 points. Larry McGaughey also added 10 points.

 
Brennan Reynard finished with 17 points for Benedict ahead of Quiron Cooke who tallied 15 points.
 
The Tigers who were the 2015 SIAC tournament champions, finished the season with a 16-12 record.
 LeMoyne-Owen will face the winner between No. 2 Miles and No. 3 Claflin on Friday, March 4 at 3:15 p.m. in a semifinal matchup.
