2017 SIAC Basketball Tournament: Day 2 Recaps

Game 6 (Women): No. 3 Fort Valley State 67, No. 6 Tuskegee 61

Shekiya Tarpkins led all players in scoring with 33 points to help Fort Valley State (9-16 overall) defeat Tuskegee in Tuesday’s opening round game at Bill Harris Arena. Tarpkins recorded eight rebounds along with five steals and three assists. Daknequa White added 13 points and three steals in the win. Briunca Caldwell finished with a game-high 10 rebounds. Caldwell recorded eights points and added three assists for the Wildcats.
 
Fort Valley State’s explosive fourth quarter performance where they outscored the Golden Tigers 24-10 was the turning point for the game. The Wildcats’ defense held the Golden Tigers to shooting 9.1 percent (1-of-11) from the field in the final quarter. Fort Valley will play Miles on Thursday, March 2 at 1 p.m.
 
Tuskegee was led by senior Rachel Brownlee who finished with 21 points and four rebounds. The Golden Tigers led for 27 minutes of the game and their bench took a 23-7 advantage over the Wildcats. Tuskegee ended the season with an overall record of 10-16.
 
Game 7 (Men): No. 3 Benedict 68, No. 6 Central State 60

Benedict secured a 68-60 win over Central State on Monday evening to advance to Thursday’s quarterfinals against No. 2 LeMoyne-Owen at 3:15 p.m. Brandon Morris, the 2016-17 SIAC Men’s Player and Newcomer of the Year led the Tigers (15-11) with 18 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks. Kel Robin added 13 points and seven rebounds. Umar Frost (11) and Quayshun Hawkins (10) rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Tigers.
 
Dwight Richards, Jr. led all scorers with 21 points. Markese McGuire finished with 11 points while Keilan Blanks and Frank Barber III each added 10. The Marauders finished the season 10-18 overall.
 
Game 8 (Women): No. 6 Clark Atlanta 79, No. 3 Lane 76

Clark Atlanta upset Lane 79-76 in Tuesday’s opening round game and will advance to play Claflin on Thursday, March 2 at 5:30 p.m. The Panthers (10-16) were led by Nicole Graham’s 18 points. Kiyanna Johnson added 14 points and Naquaisha Rattray finshed with 12. Sydni Davis led the defense with seven rebounds.
 
Lane (12-15) was led by senior Tashara Jones’ 17 points and game-high 10 rebounds. Mariah Hopkins scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Addie McNealy also finished with 16 points.

Game 9 (Men): No. 3 Miles 73, 6E Albany State 65

Shaquille Cook scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Henrique Cistrunk had 16 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots and two steals as Miles battled back after squandering a 10-point lead in the second half to take a 73-65 decision over Albany State at Bill Harris Arena. The win sends the Golden Bears (8-20) into the quarterfinals against Clark Atlanta on Thursday night at 7:45 p.m. while the loss sends the Golden Rams (10-19) home.
 
Albany State was led by Jadon Davis’ 15 points and six rebounds.
