ATLANTA (May 2, 2017) – Dessie Demlew (Benedict) and Brianna Frazier
(Benedict) were named the 2017 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Men’s and Women’s Track Athletes of the Year while
Jalen Tyson (Paine) and
LaKeeba Redfield (Paine) were selected as the Men’s and Women’s Field Athletes of the Year, announced by the league on Tuesday.
Demlew, a senior from Bahir Dar, Ethiopia leads the conference in the 5,000 meters (15:41.20) and the 10,000 meters with a time of 32:23.63. He ran his best times in the 5K and 10K at the Weems Baskin Invitational and Charlotte 49er Classic in March. Demlew is also fifth in the 1,500-meter run (4:14.74).
Frazier, a junior from Jacksonville, Fla. is currently ranked sixth in Division II in the 400-meters with a provisional time of 53.47. She is also 20
th in Division II in the 200-meter dash with a provisional time of 24.23. Among leading the SIAC in the 400-meters and 200-meter dash, Frazier is also first in the triple jump with a provisional mark of 40 feet, 8 ¼ inches that she recorded at the Gamecock Invitational in April.
Tyson, a sophomore from Kissimmee, Fla. ranks in the top 10 in the conference in several field events. He is fourth in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 4 inches, sixth in the long jump (21 feet, 8 inches) and seventh in the triple jump (43 feet, 8 ½ inches).
Redfield, a freshman from Statesboro, Ga. is first in the SIAC in the long jump with a provisional mark of 19 feet, 4 inches which she recorded at the Alice Coachmen Invitational. She secured another provisional mark of 38 feet, 9 inches in the triple jump which ranks second in the league.
The 2017 SIAC Track & Field Championship is set to take place May 4-6 at Hugh Mills Stadium on the campus of Albany State University in Albany, Ga. For more information,
