Spring Hill Sweeps the 2018 SIAC Volleyball Championship Title
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (November 7, 2018) – Spring Hill, overcoming a one set deficit, captured the 2018 SIAC Volleyball Championship title in a 3-1 victory over Kentucky State on Wednesday afternoon at the Birmingham Crossplex.
The Badgers winning streak continued as they claimed their first SIAC Volleyball Championship title since their full transition into Division II. Spring Hill advanced to their 32nd win to extend their record to 32-3 (18-0 in conference play). Wednesday’s meeting with Kentucky State marks their fourth time the two teams battled it out for the top spot.
In the first match, the Badgers and Thorobreds went point for point as the Thorobred offense gained energy and took the set by two (25-23). In the first set, Kentucky State had a total of 18 kills and maintained a .263 hitting percentage to Spring Hill’s .205 percent.
The Badgers gained traction in the second set thriller as they were victorious over the Thorobreds, 25-19. The Badger’s offense generated 15 kills. Spring Hill went on a run early in the match as Most Valuable Player, Kassandra Fairly, paced their offensive game. As the match progressed, the Thorobreds fought to the end, but dropped the set. Kentucky State struggled against Spring Hill’s defense keeping the Thorobreds to a .045 hitting percentage.
Senior middle hitter Arlandria Greathouse led the Thorobreds in kills (13) ahead of Mariah Peachy (10), and Robin Poole (9). Both Greathouse and Poole were named to the all-tournament team for their performance during the tournament.
During the third and fourth set, Spring Hill had a sideout percentage of 61 percent and 66 percent respectively to secure the final two sets and the 2018 SIAC Volleyball Championship title.
Head Coach Peggy Martin was named the Coach of the Tournament.
The Badgers will await their seeding in the NCAA Selection Show scheduled for Nov. 11.
