ATLANTA (April 16, 2018) – Albany State’s Tyler Hanson has been named the 2018 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Men’s Golf Player of the Year. Miles College’s Tyler Simmons was selected as Freshman of the Year, while Miles’ Leonard Smoot has been named SIAC Coach of the Year, announced Monday by the league office.
As just a sophomore, Hanson has captured one of the top honors as he has been named SIAC Golfer of the Year. The Albany native managed to finish with an average of 74.62 strokes on the season. This year, Hanson captured two first place finishes in two consecutive tournaments: Don Benbow Invitational and the Bulldog Florida Invitational. Hanson was dominant this season as he won two of the six tournaments he played in and recording seven top ten finishes overall.
Simmons has been named SIAC Freshman of the Year after capturing the only first place win for the Golden Bears. The rookie finished with an average of 80.29 strokes on 14 rounds. The Pleasant Grove, Ala. native managed four top ten finishes overall throughout the six events he competed in.
Smoot, the first head golf coach at Miles, has earned Coach of the Year after leading the Golden Bears to a third place conference finish. The Golden Bears will continue to play for the championship title as they face Paine College and defending champions, Albany State in the 2018 SIAC Golf Championship Tournament.
The 2018 SIAC Men’s Golf Championship will take place April 16-18
th at Flat Creek Country Club in Peachtree City, Ga. The first and last day of competition will begin at 8:30 a.m. Start time for Tuesday is slated for 11:30 a.m.
