ALBANY, Ga (April 21, 2018) – Benedict’s men and women successfully rose to the top of the leaderboards after day two of the 2018 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Track and Field Championship.
With a score of 85 points, Benedict’s Lady Tigers surpassed the Clark Atlanta Lady Panthers (80.5) by four and a half points after the second day of events. Albany State rounded out the top finishers in third as they scored 72 points. During Friday's first day of events, Benedict’s Becky Dionisio won the 10,000 meter run with a time of 44.07.49. Also, Sydnie Anthony finished in third in the long jump with a leap of 5.22 meters. Saturday, the Lady Tigers had five additional five athletes finish in the top three in the high jump, hammer throw, discus throw, and 3,000 meter steeplechase. Claflin (25) finished fourth place topping Tuskegee (24) and Miles (23) by only a few points. Paine (18), Lane (13), Kentucky State (8.5), and Central State (2) rounded out the selections for team rankings after the second day of competition.
On the men’s side, Benedict solidified their first place over the competition with 100 points. On Friday's first day of competition, the Tigers won one event as Jonhoi Clarke finished first in the shot put with a mark of 13.74 meters. Casser Middleton finished third in the shot put with a mark of 13.5 meters. The Tigers had two more top finishers on Friday as five teammates added to the winning after the second round of the championship. Morehouse came in close second trailing by only nine points after being ranked third after the first day of competition. Albany State secured third place with 87 points,while Tuskegee (17) managed fourth place. Paine (12) and Kentucky State (11) took fifth and sixth place respectively. Three schools (Fort Valley State, Central State, and Claflin) were tied for seventh place with each team having 10 points each. Lane rounded out the selections as the finished the second day of competition with one point.
These rankings are based on the scoring of nine events.
Due to anticipated inclement weather, the field events will begin at 8:30 a.m. and all running events will take place at 9:30 a.m. on a rolling schedule.
