SIAC Football Preview: Week Eight

ATLANTA — The SIAC will participate in six matchups this week, with three games televised/streamed nationally. Here's a list of the matchups and where to watch the games.

CENTRAL STATE VS. TUSKEGEE – YouTube
Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. ET

Central State will host Tuskegee at William Patrick McPherson Memorial Stadium.

Central State battled hard but fell short in a 27-24 loss to Lane on the road last week. The Marauders were able to come back from an early 13-point deficit, but the defense struggled in the fourth, allowing two touchdowns in Lane’s three final possessions. Marauders linebacker Jalil Lenore finished the game with 14 tackles, 3 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks, earning him SIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Tuskegee enters the week on a four-game winning streak following a 38-24 victory over Kentucky State. The Golden Tigers offense struck early, with a 63-yard touchdown pass in the opening drive, seconds into the game. Tuskegee’s strong defensive performance helped the team to never trail in scoring, pushing the Golden Tigers to a top conference position with the hopes of a conference championship still in reach. Golden Tigers kicker Lorcan Ryans converted all five extra-point attempts and recorded a 43-yard field goal, earning him SIAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

This season, the Marauders’ sole victory came against Savannah State on the road in week two, and the following week, Savannah State handed the Golden Tigers their only conference loss. Tuskegee also beat Lane last week, who defeated Central State the week before.

Tuskegee has only lost to Central State once in the last decade, in 2018.

Game History: 9-1 Tuskegee (since 2013)

Team Standings: Central State (1-6, 1-4 SIAC); Tuskegee (4-3, 4-1 SIAC)

MOREHOUSE VS. FORT VALLEY STATE – ESPN+
Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. ET

Morehouse will host Fort Valley State at B.T. Harvey Stadium for Homecoming.

Last week, Morehouse fell 52-6 to Albany State on the road. The Maroon Tigers struggled in all phases of the game but managed to find the end zone and briefly cut into the lead in the second quarter.

Fort Valley State had a tough outing last week, falling to South Carolina State (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) 30-3. The Wildcats struggled up front against SC State’s defense, posting a season-low in offensive production. The loss marked FVSU’s first defeat since week three.

Fort Valley State takes the lead against common opponents (Edward Waters and Kentucky State) this season, having defeated both teams.

Morehouse has only beaten Fort Valley State twice in the last 10 seasons, with the most recent win coming in 2021.

SAVANNAH STATE VS. LANE – ESPN+
Saturday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. ET

Savannah State will host Lane at T.A. Wright Stadium for a Homecoming showdown.

Savannah State clawed its way back to victory in a thrilling 27-20 win over Edward Waters last week, scoring 13 unanswered points to close out the game. Savannah State's offense turned the tide, with quarterback Jhaydon Sullivan leading the ambush. Sullivan completed 14 of 18 passes for 256 yards and threw for 4 touchdowns, earning him SIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Lane came up big in the fourth quarter in the 27-24 homecoming victory over Central State last week. The Dragons jumped out to an early 13-0 lead in the first quarter but fell scoreless in the second and third quarters. Down four points entering the fourth, Lane managed to reach the end zone twice, including the game-winning touchdown drive for 76 yards that milked the clock down less than a minute left in the game.

Since Savannah State rejoined the SIAC in 2019, the series record is split one a piece. Lane bested the Tigers in a 27-21 victory last season after Savannah State scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Against common opponents (Central State, Clark Atlanta and Tuskegee) this season, Savannah State tips the scale, outlasting both Clark Atlanta and Tuskegee.

Game History: 1-1 Tied Series (since 2022)

Team Standings: Savannah State (4-3, 3-2 SIAC); Lane (2-5, 2-4 SIAC)

KENTUCKY STATE VS. ALLEN – No stream available
Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. ET

Kentucky State will host Allen at Alumni Stadium this week.

Kentucky State suffered a 38-24 loss to Tuskegee last week, ending its two-game winning streak. The Thorobreds' offense moved the ball well but failed to convert possessions into points despite multiple opportunities.

Allen is also coming off of a loss, falling 34-27 in overtime to Benedict in the Battle of Harden Street. The Yellow Jackets played ahead a large portion of regulation, only trailing briefly in the third quarter, but the team ran out of gas in overtime, unable to convert their first and only possession.

Kentucky State has the advantage against common opponents (Albany State, Fort Valley State and Benedict) this season. The Thorobreds beat Benedict in week six, and the Tigers defeated Allen at home the following week. Both teams lost to Albany State and Fort Valley State.

The series record between the teams is tied since Allen rejoined the SIAC in 2020.

Benedict will host Miles at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium for Homecoming.

Last week, Benedict topped Allen 34-27 for a nail-biting overtime victory. After trailing the majority of the game, the Tigers tied the score at 27 to end regulation. Benedict's offense carried their late momentum into the extra period, scoring on their first OT possession, and the defense sealed the deal with a stop.

Miles cruised to a 49-28 victory over Clark Atlanta last week to hold its spot atop the conference standings. The Panthers kept the game competitive in the first half before the Golden Bears imposed their will in the third quarter, scoring 21 points to pull away with the lead. Miles linebacker Keith Green recorded 3 tackles, 2 sacks (for 13 yards), and a forced fumble, earning him SIAC Newcomer of the Week honors.

Against common opponents (Allen and Lane) this season, Miles took the win in both contests, while Benedict fell to Lane 32-27 in week two.

Albany State made Homecoming a celebration, with a commanding 52-6 win over Morehouse. The Golden Rams wasted no time, piling up 21 points in the opening quarter and cruising from there. Albany State’s defense smothered Morehouse, limiting them to just 18 rushing yards.

Edward Waters fell 27-20 to Savannah State at home. The Tigers held the lead halfway through the third quarter before the defense allowed 13 unanswered points to close out the game. Edward Waters continued to struggle between the hashes, recording the team’s sixth consecutive loss.
