SIAC Football Preview: Week Six

ATLANTA — The SIAC will participate in six matchups this week, with three games televised/streamed nationally. Here's a list of the matchups and where to watch the games.

CENTRAL STATE VS. CLARK ATLANTA – TheGrio
Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. ET

Central State will host Clark Atlanta at McPherson Memorial Stadium in the teams’ first home game of the season.

The Marauders enter the week on a two-game losing streak, looking for their second win of the season. The team’s offensive struggles continued in week five against Miles, only reaching the end zone once early in the 16-7 defeat.

Clark Atlanta looks to keep its championship hopes alive after their fourth quarter comeback against Savannah State came up short in the 35-28 loss at home.

If the Panthers pull it off, it will be the team’s first win over Central State since 2017. Last season, the Marauders spoiled Clark Atlanta’s homecoming with a 48-21 victory. The two teams have met seven times, with the Marauders winning the three most recent contests.

Game History: 5-2 Central State (since 2014)

Team Standings: Central State (1-4, 1-2 SIAC); Clark Atlanta (4-1-1, 3-1 SIAC)

FORT VALLEY STATE VS. ALLEN – ESPN+
Saturday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. ET

Fort Valley State will welcome Allen to Wildcat Stadium for Homecoming.

The Wildcats strung together their first two consecutive wins of the season in the team’s dominating performance over Edward Waters on the road. Running back Brandon Marshall reached the end zone four times and racked up 205 all-purpose yards. Returner DeJuan Bell had two touchdowns and 214 total yards on kickoff and punt returns. The performances earned the student-athletes SIAC co-offensive and special teams player of the week honors, respectively.

The Yellow Jackets are still searching for their first conference win of the season after suffering the team’s biggest loss of the season at home against Albany State in the 57-17 defeat.

Since rejoining the SIAC, Allen has not been able to get over the hump that is FVSU. The closest the Yellow Jackets have come to defeating the Wildcats was in 2022 when the team lost by two points on the road after Fort Valley pieced together a second-half comeback.

Game History: 3-0 Fort Valley State (since 2021)

Team Standings: Fort Valley State (3-2, 3-1 SIAC); Allen (1-4, 0-3 SIAC)

MILES VS. ALBANY STATE – ESPN+
Saturday, Oct. 12 at 3 p.m. ET

Miles will host Albany State at Albert J. H. Sloan-Alumni Stadium in a battle for the number one spot in the SIAC standings. Both teams are on a three-game win streak leading up to week six.

In week five, the Golden Bears’ defense met the occasion as the offense stumbled a bit in the 16-7 homecoming victory over Central State.

The Golden Rams enter week six celebrating their most dominating win of the season in the 57-17 win over Allen. Quarterback Isaiah Knowles threw for a season-high 372 yards and 6 touchdowns, earning BOXTOROW HBCU National Player of the Week and SIAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors. Defensive back Aaron Dawson Jr. recorded nine total tackles, including two tackles for loss, to earn SIAC Newcomer of the Week.

Against common opponents (Central State and Allen) this season, Albany State has outscored Miles 85-49, while Miles’ defense has held the same opponents to slightly fewer points.

Last season, the Golden Rams ended the Golden Bears’ championship campaign after defeating them 48-7 in week nine.

Game History: 11-6 Albany State (since 2010)

Team Standings: Miles (3-2, 3-0 SIAC); Albany State (3-2, 3-0 SIAC)

Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. ET

Kentucky State will host Benedict at Alumni Stadium this week.

The Tigers fell below .500 overall for the first time since 2021 after a 38-21 loss to North Greenville (Gulf South Conference). Benedict went down 21-0 in the second quarter, and the team was never able to overcome the deficit.

Against a common opponent (Lane) this season, the Thorobreds prevailed, whereas Benedict lost 32-27 in week one.

When the two teams met last season, Benedict dominated in the 63-14 victory over the Thorobreds at home.

The Golden Tigers shutout rival Morehouse 42-0 in last week's Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic. Linebacker Kaquan Kimber anchored the team’s defense with eight tackles (seven solo), including two tackles for loss, one of which was a sack, earning SIAC Defensive Player of the Week.

Tuskegee has dominated the series in recent history, winning all but one game against the Dragons since the turn of the century.

In 2023, the teams duked it out in a double overtime thriller, with the Golden Tigers edging Lane out in a 28-22 victory.
