MALAGA, Spain —
Albany State University senior
Asia Raulerson, from Clermont, Florida, made history as part of the Northern Mariana Islands’ team at the prestigious Billie Jean King Cup, the world’s largest annual international women’s team competition. The tournament, held at the Martin Carpena Arena in Malaga, Spain, gave Raulerson a grand stage to showcase her skills as a doubles specialist.
The Billie Jean King Cup, formerly known as the Federation Cup (1963-95) and Fed Cup (1995-2020), was launched in 1963 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the International Tennis Federation.
The 2024 edition featured 17 regions, with Raulerson's team competing in the Asia/Oceania Group III tournament. Despite representing one of the smallest territories in the competition, Raulerson and her team delivered extraordinary performances, defeating Vietnam, Brunei, Macau, and Myanmar in the finals to clinch promotion to Group II in 2025.
Raulerson played a pivotal role throughout the tournament, particularly in the doubles matches, where her precision and teamwork proved critical in securing victories. Reflecting on the experience, Raulerson expressed pride in her team's achievement.
"Our team did a very good job at being No. 1," Raulerson said. "We were the smallest commonwealth in the competition, and we somehow still managed to come out on top. I am proud of my teammates."
The significance of this victory extends beyond the court, as Raulerson's participation at such a high level underscores her dedication to the sport and her ability to compete on a global stage. Her leadership and determination have not only brought pride to the Northern Mariana Islands but also to Albany State University, where she has been a standout athlete.
Raulerson's achievement in Malaga is a testament to her hard work, resilience and passion for tennis. With her team’s promotion to Group II, she leaves behind a legacy of excellence and sets an example for future generations of Albany State student-athletes.
