SIAC Football Weekly Honors: Sept. 17

ATLANTA — The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its SIAC Football Players of the Week on Tuesday, Sept. 17, honoring student-athletes for impressive performances in games played last week. Kelvin Durham (Fort Valley State), Caleb Grant (Morehouse), Jose Chaires (Central State) and Charles Simmons (Benedict) were recognized.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – KELVIN DURHAM, FORT VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY
Quarterback | R-Junior | Homestead, Fla.
Durham engineered four straight touchdowns between the second and third quarters to help the Wildcats pull away from Kentucky State in the 42-0 win. He completed 17 of 20 passes for 283 yards for four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also added touchdown passes of 10 and 10 yards in the second quarter and 41 and 74 yards in the third quarter. Durham ran for 19 yards on five carries for 302 yards of total offense.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – CALEB GRANT, MOREHOUSE COLLEGE 
Linebacker | Senior | Stone Mountain, Ga.

Grant led a Maroon Tiger defense with 12 tackles against FCS Howard at the third annual HBCU NY Classic.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK – JOSE CHAIRES, CENTRAL STATE UNIVERSITY
Kicker/Punter | Senior | Atlanta, Ga.

Chaires again helped the Marauders flip the field in a defensive battle. He averaged 36 yards per punt, with little room to mount returns. Chaires was 1-1 on field goals and 1-1 on extra points.

NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK – CHARLES SIMMONS, BENEDICT COLLEGE
Quarterback | Junior | Temple Terrace, Fla.

Charles "Tre" Simmons came off the bench to throw for 131 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown in Benedict's 32-27 loss to Lane College. Simmons was involved in all four of Benedict's touchdowns. He scored on a 73-yard run. He completed 10 of 18 passes with no interceptions and was sacked just once. Simmons is a transfer from McNeese State.
