SIAC Men’s Basketball Preview - Jan. 30

ATLANTA — The SIAC men’s basketball schedule features a slate of conference and non-conference games in the next week. Here's a list of the matchups and where to watch the games.

EDWARD WATERS
at Savannah State – SIAC Network
Saturday, Feb. 1, at 4 p.m. ET

Edward Waters (14-6, 10-3 SIAC), wrapping up a three-game road swing, will travel to the Hostess City on Saturday to face Savannah State (7-9, 5-7 SIAC) for the teams’ first meeting this season.

Last week, the Tigers secured back-to-back wins in Columbia, S.C., edging Benedict 73-71 and defeating Allen 61-56. Junior guard Trevino Glover matched a game-high 21 points and added a game-winning 3-pointer at Benedict. Glover was followed by Ja’Kobe Williams, who posted a team-high 16 points at Allen, helping Edward Waters to its 14th win of the season and the top of the east division standings.

ALBANY STATE
vs. Fort Valley State – SIAC Network
Saturday, Feb. 1, at 6 p.m. ET

Albany State (13-7, 10-3 SIAC) welcomes in-state rival Fort Valley State (7-12, 6-6 SIAC) to the HPER Complex for a basketball Homecoming clash. The Golden Rams, who sit second in the east division, enter the weekend on a four-game winning streak following road victories at Clark Atlanta and Morehouse last week.

Junior guard Shakur Poteat led Albany State with 16 points against Clark Atlanta before pouring in a game-high 25 at Morehouse, helping the Golden Rams defeat the Maroon Tigers for the first time since 2020.

CLARK ATLANTA

Clark Atlanta (12-7, 9-3 SIAC) returns home to L.S. Epps Gymnasium for a pair of conference matchups. The Panthers will host Morehouse (9-10, 6-5 SIAC) on Saturday and Allen (4-11, 1-9 SIAC) on Wednesday, aiming to better their divisional standing after splitting a pair of home games last week and falling to third place.

CAU errors found the team at a loss against Albany State on Saturday, but the Panthers bounced back with a 72-67 victory over Fort Valley State on Monday. Senior forward/center Shemani Fuller led the way in both contests, posting a game-high 19 points against the Golden Rams and adding 14 points in the win over Fort Valley State.

Morehouse (9-10, 6-5 SIAC), fourth in the east division, will face reigning SIAC champion Clark Atlanta (12-7, 9-3 SIAC) on Saturday and Savannah State (7-9, 5-7 SIAC) on Monday evening in back-to-back away games. The Maroon Tigers will return to Forbes Arena on Thursday against Allen (4-11, 1-9 SIAC).

Last week, Morehouse dropped a pair of conference matchups at home, falling 58-57 to Fort Valley State and 76-73 in overtime to Albany State. Senior forward Amahn Decker led the Maroon Tigers with 29 points across both contests.

FORT VALLEY STATE

Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m. ET

Fort Valley State (7-12, 6-6 SIAC) will face rival Albany State (13-7, 10-3 SIAC) on Saturday before returning home to host Tuskegee (9-9, 7-5 SIAC) on Tuesday in a cross-division matchup.

The Wildcats, fifth in the east division, aim to bounce back after dropping their longest win streak of the season. FVSU edged Morehouse 58-57 on Saturday but suffered a 72-67 loss at Clark Atlanta on Monday, snapping the team’s four-game win streak.

Sophomore forward Hassane Diallo paced the Wildcats with 32 total points across the two contests, including a game-high 22 against Clark Atlanta.

SAVANNAH STATE

Savannah State (7-9, 5-7 SIAC), sixth in the east, welcomes division leader Edward Waters (14-6, 10-3 SIAC) to Tiger Arena on Saturday for the teams’ first meeting of the season. The team will face Morehouse (9-10, 6-5 SIAC) for the second time this season on Monday. Savannah State defeated the Maroon Tigers, 64-57, in a late second-half victory on Jan. 8.

Last week, Savannah State suffered a 50-48 loss to Benedict on the road. Despite the loss, senior forward Qua King matched a game-high 15 points in the contest. King was followed by Ayjay Plain, who contributed 11 points to the SSU’s tally.

BENEDICT

Saturday, Feb. 1, at 4 p.m. ET

Benedict (4-16, 4-9 SIAC) will face neighboring Allen (4-11, 1-9 SIAC) on Saturday in the teams’ first meeting this season. The Tigers hope to better their seventh in the east division this week, having lost only once to the Yellow Jackets in the last four seasons.

Benedict fell to Edward Waters, 73-71, at home on Saturday, but BC rebounded on Monday with a 50-48 victory over Savannah State to break a six-game losing streak. The team picked up a non-conference game on Wednesday against Claflin (CIAA) that resulted in a 70-64 loss.

Junior guard Caleb Hymon led Benedict with 52 total points across the three contests, matching a game-high 21 points against Edward Waters before pacing all scorers with 21 against Claflin.

Last week, Allen fought to the final second but fell 61-56 to Edward Waters at home. Junior guard Peyton Weathersby led the team’s efforts with a game-high 22 points.

Miles (15-3, 12-1 SIAC), who sits atop the west division standings, welcomes Lane (3-15, 3-10 SIAC) to Knox-Windham Gymnasium on Saturday for the teams’ first meeting of the season. The Golden Bears will return to action at home against Oakwood (NAIA) on Tuesday.

Last week, Miles dominated in a 67-44 victory over Tuskegee on Saturday before outlasting Spring Hill in an 83-80 overtime victory for its sixth-straight win.

Senior guard Chase Ballard tallied 13 points to lead the Golden Bears’ efforts against Tuskegee. Ballard was followed by Najashi Tolefree, who contributed a team-high 18 to the win over Spring Hill.

Tuskegee split games against divisional opponents last week and held on to its second-place standing in the west. The Golden Tigers lost 67-44 to Miles on Saturday, but the team bounced back with a 51-50 win at Lane on Monday.

Junior forward Kusamae Draper paced the Golden Tigers, tallying 16 points against Miles, and he notched a 20-point, 14-rebound double-double in the win over the Dragons.

Last week, the Thorobreds secured a 72-69 win over LeMoyne-Owen at home. Senior forward Ogien Ayo notched a game-high 20 points in the contest, helping Kentucky State to its tenth win of the season.

CENTRAL STATE
at Kentucky State – SIAC Network
Saturday, Feb. 1, at 4 p.m. ET

Central State (10-10, 6-7 SIAC), fourth in the west division, will face Kentucky State (10-9, 7-7 SIAC) in a Saturday road contest for the teams’ first meeting this season. The Marauders hope to improve their standing this week following a pair of wins over conference and non-conference opponents.

Last week, Central State secured an 86-69 victory over LeMoyne-Owen at home. The Marauders then traveled to face Simmons (NCCAA) on Wednesday, defeating the Falcons 75-57.

Junior guard Ramar Pryor led Central State over the two outings, delivering an 18-point game against the Magicians before contributing 12 at Simmons, earning him SIAC Newcomer of the Week honors.

Kentucky State Game History: 15-11 Kentucky State (since 2011)

SPRING HILL
vs. Tuskegee – SIAC Network
Saturday, Feb. 1, at 4 p.m. ET

Spring Hill (7-11, 5-8 SIAC), fifth in the west division, will kickoff a three-game home slate against Tuskegee (9-9, 7-5 SIAC) in the teams’ first meeting this season.

Last week, the Badgers went 1-1 in conference play on the road, completing a 76-65 victory at Lane and dropping an 83-80 overtime loss at Miles on Monday.

Senior guard Walter Peggs Jr. led the Badgers in both contests, leading all scorers with 26 points at Lane before adding a game-high 19 at Miles. Peggs' efforts earned him SIAC Player of the Week honors.

LANE

Last week, the Dragons fell 76-65 to Spring Hill on Saturday and lost a 51-50 nail-biter to Tuskegee on Monday.

Junior point guard Rico Sain II paced the Dragons, scoring 39 points across the two contests. Sain had 23 points against the Badgers and contributed 16 against Tuskegee.

Sophomore guard Khalil Genwright led LeMoyne-Owen with 40 points across the two contests, scoring a game-high 21 points against Central State and adding 19 points at Kentucky State.
