SIAC Football Preview: Week 7

SIAC Football Preview: Week 7

ATLANTA — And then there were two. Heading into Week 7, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference is down to only Benedict College and Albany State still perfect in league.

Newly-donned No. 24 Benedict and Receiving Votes Albany State have the two biggest weekend contests before they clash the following week.

Kentucky State and Morehouse College also are high-flying with a combined five-straight wins between them.

Looking into the crystal ball, Jacksonville will be hosting the top Week 7 contest of the seven scheduled on Saturday afternoon. The last one to put the pigskin in play will be Edward Waters (3-1) hosting nationally-ranked Benedict (5-0) in the battle of the Tigers beginning at 4 p.m.

Yet to fall to an NCAA DII opponent, Albany State (4-0) welcomes Tuskegee University (1-3) for its Homecoming affair starting at 1 p.m.

In what will be the weekend’s lone classic, Savannah State (2-2) and Fort Valley State (1-3) meet in the Good Trouble Heritage Classic at Laney Memorial Stadium in Augusta.

Morehouse tries to keep its upward trajectory for a third week in a row by hosting Lane College in its Homecoming. Miles College makes it a third Homecoming weekend when it entertains Clark Atlanta.

Kentucky State will see the fall foliage when it plays in New Hampshire in a non-SIAC game at Franklin Pierce of the Northeast-10. Central State rounds out the docket by hosting Kentucky Christian.

The big wins were plentiful across the league results last weekend. The usual top duo victories had to be increased to three for Kentucky State and Benedict without leaving out Morehouse College. In last week’s marquee matchup, Kentucky State put the final 28 points on the scoreboard in a 42-14 win over Edward Waters. Benedict used an opening kickoff return touchdown and a stifling defense for a 14-7 win over Fort Valley State. Morehouse College turned the clock back a few weeks early as it secured two wins in a row for the first time in four years in a 31-26 comeback at Central State.

The Honorable Mention status had to be doubled as well for Miles College and Savannah State. In a tough start to the year, Miles was able to ride a 13-0 start and took Lane College (23-13). Savannah State booted an overtime field goal and recovered an Allen University fumble in the extra period (23-20).

For the first time in 2025, the SIAC has a team in the AFCA Top 25 as Benedict College slid into the No. 24 spot with 77 votes while Albany State Received Votes with two. BOXTOROW’s HBCU D2 rankings have five SIAC squads within its top 10 ratings – 2. Albany State (1 first place vote); 3. Benedict College (5 first place votes); 5. Kentucky State; 6. Edward Waters and 10. Savannah State.

For the second time in as many weeks, the team visiting southwest Georgia comes off a bye week. Tuskegee (2-4, 1-3 SIAC) aims to right its ship and end its four-game skid when it goes to be the Homecoming opponent of Albany State (5-1, 4-0 SIAC).

Saturday will be the 48th meeting between the two programs. The Golden Tigers hold a 25-21-1 edge. The two squads have not taken to the gridiron since the Golden Rams recorded a 21-0 win in 2019. Tuskegee gained the same winning result the prior year in 2018 by a 20-0 final.

Despite its lowest point production against a DII opponent, ASU took care of Clark Atlanta, 32-7. The Golden Rams put up the first 13 points and posted the only 19 tallies in the second half. The ASU offense saw both Aljhanod Thomas and Tiant Wyche surpass the 100-yard rushing mark with 105 and 103 on 31 combined carries.

After two opening victories, Tuskegee has come out on the short end in its last four games. The Golden Tigers built a 17-0 lead in the first 23:20 only to see Morehouse College win the rest of the day by a 27-3 margin in a 27-20 final.

Quarterback Bryson McGrew accounted for both Tuskegee touchdowns with one through the air of his 230 yards passing and ran for the other where he rushed for 70 yards on 17 attempts. Wide receiver EJ Hall grabbed six passes for 152 yards with the one score.

The battle of two teams aiming for two different firsts. Lane College (0-6, 0-4 SIAC) aims for its first 2025 victory while Morehouse College (2-4, 2-2 SIAC) tries for its first three-game win streak since 2021.

Following three tough results to begin the year, Morehouse narrowly lost to Edward Waters (27-24). At Central State, Morehouse never trailed and used a 17-0 start as part of it. Running back Nicholas Woodford rushed for 95 yards and a 9-yard touchdown on 24 carries.

Linebacker Zach Underwood earned the Maroon Tigers first weekly honors as the SIAC Newcomer of the Week. Underwood anchored the defense where he helped the unit record four sacks and recovered three fumbles. His strip sack stopped a key Central State drive. He had nine tackles for the day with three for a loss and forced two fumbles.

Lane battled back from down 13-0 as quarterback Nick Billoups threw a touchdown pass only 42 seconds into the fourth quarter (20-13). Miles held on for the 23-13 win after a field goal six minutes later. Billoups threw for 170 yards and two scores. Wide receiver Oliver Van Dyke pulled in seven of his passes for 74 yards.

The 2024 SIAC Championship game rematch returns to Fairfield, Ala., Saturday afternoon. Clark Atlanta (2-4, 1-3 SIAC) looks to spoil Homecoming at Miles (1-6, 1-3 SIAC) as the two teams meet for the third time in less than two years.

In the series, Miles has come out on top five more times with a 20-15 advantage. The Golden Bears claimed both 2024 meetings – 49-28 in the regular season and 53-25 for the SIAC Championship. Overall, Miles has won the last nine contests with CAU last winning by a 14-0 final in 2010.

In a tough first six games, Miles College put its first ‘W’ in the win column after it surpassed 20 points for the first time this season. The Golden Bears surged to an early 13-0 lead at the Dragons of Lane College and sealed the win with a 30-yard field goal with 8:14 left in the day (23-13).

Leading the winning charge, quarterback Brinley Vandiver completed 19 of his 27 passes for 257 yards and a pair of those completions going for touchdowns. Marquez Mobley (8-102) and Glen Williams (3-96) combined for 198 of the 257 yards.

Clark Atlanta tries to get back on track after it came up short the last three weeks. The Panthers can attribute the last two weeks to playing the two undefeated SIAC teams, including a 32-7 final last game at the Golden Rams of Albany State. CAU fell behind 13-0 before it put together a 65-yard scoring drive for a 13-7 halftime tally. Albany State, though, controlled the second 30 minutes for the game’s final 19 points.

Wide receiver Ronnie West pulled in nine catches for 91 yards to highlight the CAU offense. Carter MasonEric Searcy and Kurtis Waye each stopped seven ball carriers.

In the third different Georgia location over the last four years, the Tigers and Wildcats renew their rivalry. Savannah State (3-3, 2-2 SIAC) makes the short trip to Augusta where Fort Valley State (1-5, 1-3 SIAC) will be the host of the Good Trouble Heritage Classic.

The two blue rivals take to the gridiron for the 60th time Saturday afternoon. FVSU holds a 40-15-4 advantage over the first 59 matchups. The Wildcats won the last two — 30-0 (2024) and 38-24 (2023). Savannah State recorded the upset in the last Classic held in Macon by a 28-24 score.

The Tigers try to keep the late magic from last weekend going. Savannah State extended its lead to 20-12 on a 39-yard field goal. Allen University answered with three minutes left for a 20-20 tie. For the third time in the game, Tiger kicker Jimmy Tran booted a field goal with a 25-yarder and linebacker Darrian Bell recovered the Yellow Jacket fumble in the overtime to clinch the game (23-20).

Bell earned SIAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors with the highest single-game tackle total of the year in the league with 23 to go with one for a loss, two pass breakups and the key fumble recovery. Running back Joseph Hampton ran for 107 yards on the ground on 11 carries with both of the team’s touchdowns. Quarterback Fabian Walker threw for 192 yards.

FVSU has been the SIAC ‘hard luck’ team for 2025. The Wildcats’ six games have been decided by a combined 38 points for a 6.3-point average margin. FVSU has only come out on top of one of those (27-20 at Tuskegee two weeks ago) with the latest close ending being a 14-7 loss at SIAC-leader Benedict. Trailing 7-0 after a game-opening kick return touchdown, FVSU evened the game with 5:20 in the second quarter on a Don Hudson Jr. 46-yard pass to J.T. Pendleton. Benedict held FVSU to two first downs over the final 35 minutes and scored the game-winner 3:50 left in the third frame.

In the last Saturday kickoff, the top clash of the day begins. No. 24 Benedict College (6-0, 5-0 SIAC) tests out the new ranking for the first time in Jacksonville against Edward Waters (4-2, 3-1 SIAC).

The two teams face each other for only the sixth time. Benedict College has won four of the first five, including the last three. Benedict prevailed by a 31-28 final last fall. Edward Waters’ series win came 23 years ago in a low-scoring 6-0 final in 2002.

In six games, Benedict has shown it can win low-scoring games, as well as three times putting over 38 points on the scoreboard. After two 10-0 identical shutouts to start the year, it used a Jaxon Williams’ 88-yard opening-kick return for a touchdown and a defense which allowed only 222 yards and one Fort Valley State first down over the last 31 minutes of the game of the 14-7 victory.

Williams also caught two passes for 44 yards and a 29-yard touchdown pass. He was named the SIAC Special Teams Player of the Week with his 112 yards in two kick returns with the 88-yard touchdown. Defensively, defensive lineman Israel Nwokocha received SIAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week with 10 tackles, 3.5 for loss, 2.5 sacks and a quarterback hurry.

Edward Waters fell from the SIAC undefeated ranks last week. The Tigers tied the game at 14-14 only to see the Thorobreds of Kentucky State post the game’s final 28 points (42-14). Quarterback Noah Bodden completed 19 of 37 passes for 221 yards and he rushed for another 71 yards. Running back Johntarrious Thomas rushed for both Tiger touchdowns. Both Rodney Williams and Aykenon Rodgers registered double-digit tackle efforts with 13 and 10.
