ATLANTA — It has been a tale of two divisions so far this fall in women’s volleyball action. The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference battle for the top of the East Division is heating up, while Spring Hill College holds a solid lead in the West Division.
The SIAC West Crossover is in the books, and with a key Tuesday night matchup complete, four teams are now separated by just a game and a half, with a fifth knocking on the door and needing a big week to climb into the top half.
Fort Valley State enters the week atop the East at 8-1, holding the early tiebreaker over Albany State (9-2) by virtue of a five-set head-to-head win. Riding a four-match win streak,
Savannah State has jumped up to third with a 7-2 mark, while
Benedict slipped a half-game into fourth at 7-3.
Allen (6-4) could join the mix as it faces both Benedict and Fort Valley State between this week.
Spring Hill owns the league’s longest active winning streak at 12 wins, which includes being unblemished in both crossover tournaments. The Badgers are the conference’s lone undefeated team at 11-0 and hold a five-match lead over second-place
Central State (5-5).
For the second time this season, the East Division claimed supremacy in crossover play. The East went 12-9 in the 21 matches played in Memphis last Friday and Saturday. Overall, the East teams finished with a 33-16 (.673) record against the West in their two weekends of head-to-head competition.
In Memphis, the two teams on winning streaks, Spring Hill and Savannah State, registered the only 3-0 marks. Spring Hill took 9 of 10 sets played, while Savannah State claimed 9 of 11 sets.
Central State and Allen led a group of five, which were joined by Fort Valley State, Benedict and Albany State, that finished 2-1 in the tournament.
There are three key matchups starting this evening, as Savannah State hosts Clark Atlanta, Benedict visits neighboring Allen and Spring Hill travels to meet Tuskegee.
