COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Edward Waters University women's volleyball team continued its mid season surge, closing out a dominant South Carolina road trip with back-to-back 3-0 victories over Benedict College on Saturday and Allen University on Sunday.
The Lady Tigers have now won three straight matches, all by straight-set sweeps, improving their record to 8-12 overall and 8-7 in SIAC play.
In Saturday's win over Benedict, Edward Waters completed the season series sweep of the Tigers behind a stellar performance from Naomy Vergez, who posted a double-double with 19 kills and 10 digs, while also adding a block and an ace. Brooklyn Jones powered the attack with nine kills, and Dimaliz Figueroa anchored the defense with a team-high 14 digs. Norah Laurore filled the stat sheet with eight kills, four digs, four aces, and a block, while setter Autumn James directed the offense efficiently, recording 33 assists and five digs in the victory.
Edward Waters carried that same momentum into Sunday's match up with Allen, cruising their third consecutive sweep. Vergez once again led the way with her second straight double-double, tallying 14 kills, 12 digs, and two aces. James continued her strong play with 32 assists, six digs, and two aces, while Jones contributed eight kills, and Figueroa added eight digs in the win.
With confidence and chemistry building, the Lady Tigers will take a well-earned break during Homecoming week before returning to action on Monday, November 3, for a road match at Clark Atlanta University. The first serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. inside the L.S. Epps Gymnasium.
