SIAC Women's Volleyball Weekly Honors: Oct. 7

ATLANTA — The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its Women's Volleyball Players of the Week on Tuesday, Oct. 7, honoring student-athletes for impressive performances in matches played last week. Karea Copeland (Miles), Ashlyn Whiteside (Spring Hill) and Monica Vargo (Spring Hill) were recognized.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER AND NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK – KAREA COPELAND, MILES COLLEGE
Outside Hitter | Freshman | Newnan, Ga.
Copeland was nearly unstoppable for the Lady Bears, finishing with 71 kills, 35 digs and nine service aces across five matches last week. She posted a double-double (19 kills, 11 digs) against Central State, recorded 21 kills and hit .354 against Lane, and hit .464 (14-1-28) against LeMoyne-Owen. Copeland hit .261 and averaged 14.2 kills per match (3.94 kills per set over 18 sets) as Miles went 3-2.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – ASHLYN WHITESIDE, SPRING HILL COLLEGE
Defensive Specialist/Libero | R-Sophomore | Fairhope, Ala.
Whiteside totaled 43 digs through four 3-0 victories at the SIAC West Division Cluster. Her highlights included 17 digs against LeMoyne-Owen and 13 versus Kentucky State. She continues to lead the conference with 250 digs while averaging 4.55 per set.

SETTER OF THE WEEK – MONICA VARGO, SPRING HILL COLLEGE
Setter | Graduate | Fogelsville, Pa.
Vargo recorded 88 assists through four clean sweeps at the SIAC West Division Cluster. Her highlight came against Kentucky State, where she tallied a match-leading 34 assists. The Badger offense went through Vargo, who also had 20-plus performances against both Lane and Central State.
