SIAC Women’s Volleyball Preview: Nov. 5

ATLANTA — One division title is secure and another can be claimed before the weekend. The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's volleyball teams begin their final two weeks of play and aim for conference tournament positions.

On the power of its 18-game win streak, Spring Hill College has long since clinched the West Division regular-season title as the lone SIAC undefeated team in league play at 17-0. The Lady Badgers have skyrocketed to 21-5 overall after a 3-5 start to their campaign and lead the West by seven games.

The East Division regular-season title can be claimed Wednesday night. Fort Valley State (20-4, 14-2 SIAC) has a 2.5-game lead on both Savannah State (15-6, 11-4 SIAC) and Albany State (12-13, 11-4 SIAC) with three games left. A Wildcat Wednesday victory at Benedict College (15-7, 9-6 SIAC) would allow the team to raise the East hardware.

Savannah State can clinch one of the four SIAC East spots for the SIAC Tournament with a Wednesday victory at Clark Atlanta. Albany State can match the feat and return to the SIAC Tournament with a Sunday win as it hosts Benedict.

Back in the West Division, Central State (13-10, 9-7 SIAC) can claim second place in the regular season with a Friday evening home victory versus LeMoyne-Owen. Fighting for the other two West tournament berths are Miles College (17-14, 7-10 SIAC), Tuskegee (14-11, 7-10 SIAC) and Kentucky State (7-22, 6-10 SIAC).

While the West Division regular-season title has been decided with Spring Hill holding a seven-game lead, the East Division's top two teams — Fort Valley State and Albany State — have their big Friday night rematch as three games continue to separate the top four programs.

As seen by their division positions, Fort Valley State moved into its 2.5-match lead in the East after sweeping Clark Atlanta, Albany State and Allen last week, with the last two being in five-set battles. Central State moved comfortably into second in the West Division with a 2-0 SIAC outcome and a lone loss in a nonconference contest.

The biggest SIAC matches from Wednesday through Sunday begin with the Fort Valley State at Benedict matchup Wednesday evening. Savannah State can also claim a SIAC Tournament spot with a win at Clark Atlanta that night. The Tigers also travel to Edward Waters on Friday night before Benedict visits Albany State on Sunday afternoon.

Miles College hosts two important matches, with Spring Hill on Thursday and Tuskegee Friday evening, as the biggest West clashes.
