Miles College Golden Bears sweep Benedict to open conference play

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Casey Threats had two hits and drove in four runs as Miles took a doubleheader from Benedict on Saturday to open Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Golden Bears (5-3-1, 2-0) took the first game 9-8 before taking the nightcap 6-3. Camden Matthews recorded saves in both games to keep Benedict winless on the season (0-2, 0-2).

GAME 1 - MILES 9, BENEDICT 8
The Golden Bears played from behind the entire game. Brandon Leroy and Zakry Licastro each homered early, but Miles trailed 8-6 heading into the ninth inning. Jordan Pearson and Nick Copen opened the inning with walks, and both advanced on a groundout. That's when Threats came up with a huge hit, a triple to right field that tied the score. Landon Whitehead would execute a great bunt that scored Threats on the sacrifice and put the Golden Bears back in front. The Tigers put runners on first and second with one out against Matthews, but he got his second strikeout and a flyout to secure the win for Jaelyn Rhynes, who struck out two in 3 2/3 innings of relief.

GAME 2 - MILES 6, BENEDICT 3
Miles jumped out to a big lead in the first. Jayvionne Williams scored on a wild pitch before Threats hit a two-run homer to left for a 3-0 lead. A sacrifice bunt by Licastro scored Leroy to give the Golden Bears a four-run cushion before Benedict even came to bat. Starter Copen rolled through the first four innings, keeping the Tigers off the scoreboard and was staked to a 6-0 lead before he ran into trouble. Copen allowed a solo home run in the fifth and a two-run shot to start the sixth before Daveyon Lavender was called out of the 'pen. He got the Golden Bears through the sixth before Matthews coaxed two infield pop-ups and a strikeout to earn another save and finish off the win for Copen.
