Fort Valley State Men’s Volleyball Battles Crusaders and Lopes

RENO, Nev. — The Wildcats wrapped up its weekend trip to the west on Saturday. Fort Valley State battled tough but dropped men's volleyball matches to Belmont-Abbey College, 3-1, and nationally-ranked Grand Canyon, 3-0, at the Silver State Showcase on the second day.
 
After falling short in the first two sets (21-25, 16-25), FVSU netted five of the last six points for a 25-19 set three win over Belmont-Abbey. The Crusaders, though, held off the Wildcats when an Isaiah Fedd kill pulled the margin to 24-23. Belmont-Abbey put up the match-ending tally, 25-23, on the next point.
 
The Lopes (7-1) held serve in the first two sets of the late match by 25-19 and 25-11 scores. FVSU came back from three points down for a 24-24 tie. The Wildcats tied it again moments later at 25-25 before the Lopes put two points In a row up for the 27-25 extra-point final.
 
FVSU (2-7) hit an afternoon high of .385 with 15 kills in the winning third set against Belmont-Abbey.
 
Leading the front line, Fedd downed 30 kills, 20 against Belmont-Abbey, at a .400 rate with three blocks and two aces.
 
Jaxon Hicks was right behind with 18 kills and seven digs. Raheem Thomas chipped in six kills and six total blocks, while Taviian Martin had six winners of his own with eight total blocks and five digs.
 
Oshane Farquharson handed out 33 assists in the seven sets, with four kills and eight digs. Jakaris Brown registered a season-high 20 assists and five digs in the first match.
 
Rounding out the effort, Muhammad Mbaye finished with five blocks, three kills and three digs.
 
FVSU will have over a week off before it has its next match in the HPE Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 12, starting at 6 p.m. against Emmanuel College.
