SIAC Men’s Basketball Preview - Feb. 7

ATLANTA — The SIAC men’s basketball schedule features a slate of divisional conference games in the next week. Here's a list of the matchups and where to watch the games.

ALBANY STATE
vs. Morehouse – SIAC Network
Saturday, Feb. 8, at 4 p.m. ET

vs. Clark Atlanta – SIAC Network
Monday, Feb. 10, at 7:30 p.m. ET

Albany State (14-7, 11-3 SIAC) will host in-state foes Morehouse (11-10, 9-5 SIAC) and Clark Atlanta (12-8, 9-4 SIAC) this week. The Golden Rams notched road victories against both teams last month, winning 68-64 at Clark Atlanta and 76-73 at Morehouse.

Albany State climbed to the top of the east division standings with a 73-52 win over rival Fort Valley State last week. Senior point guard G’Shan Aldridge led all scorers with 16 points, helping the Golden Rams extend their win streak to five games—their longest of the season.

EDWARD WATERS

Edward Waters (14-7, 10-4 SIAC) will host Allen (5-11, 2-9 SIAC) on Saturday and Benedict (4-17, 4-10 SIAC) on Monday, aiming to reclaim first place in the east division after falling to second last week.

Edward Waters is coming off a 67-63 loss at Savannah State, its third consecutive loss in the series between the teams. Senior guard RJ Noord paced EWU with 13 points in the contest and was followed by Ja’Kobe Williams, who added 12.

CLARK ATLANTA

Clark Atlanta (12-8, 9-4 SIAC) will face Fort Valley State (8-13, 7-7 SIAC) and Albany State (14-7, 11-3 SIAC) on the road this week. The Panthers split their previous meetings with the teams this season, falling 68-64 to Albany State and posting a 72-67 win over Fort Valley State.

Clark Atlanta maintained its position at third in the east last week, finishing 1-1 at home. The Panthers fell 75-71 to Morehouse and rebounded with a 72-54 victory over Allen on Wednesday.

Senior guard Jalen Williams led CAU with 21 points in the loss to the Maroon Tigers, while senior forward Xavier Griffith recorded a game-high 19 against the Yellow Jackets.

MOREHOUSE

Morehouse (11-10, 9-5 SIAC), fourth in the east division, will face Albany State (14-7, 11-3 SIAC) and Fort Valley State (8-13, 7-7 SIAC) this week. The Maroon Tigers aim to avenge their earlier losses to both teams, having fallen 58-57 to the Wildcats and 76-73 in overtime to Albany State.

Morehouse claimed three home victories last week, outlasting Clark Atlanta 75-71 on Saturday, defeating Savannah State 65-59 on Monday and Allen 72-52 on Thursday.

Sophomore guard Cedric Taylor III powered the Maroon Tigers with 74 points and game-highs across the three contests. Taylor had 26 points at Clark Atlanta, 19 against Savannah State, and a 29-point, 10-rebound double-double performance against Allen, helping Morehouse to its third-straight win.

FORT VALLEY STATE

Fort Valley State (8-13, 7-7 SIAC) will host Clark Atlanta (12-8, 9-4 SIAC) and Morehouse (11-10, 9-5 SIAC) this week. The Wildcats split their January meetings with the two teams, edging Morehouse 58-57 and falling 72-67 at Clark Atlanta.

Fort Valley State lost 73-52 at Albany State on Saturday in a divisional rivalry. The Wildcats rebounded from the loss to upset cross-divisional opponent Tuskegee, 66-65, at home on Tuesday.

Junior forward Jaylen Jackson led Fort Valley State with 34 total points across the two games—10 in the loss at Albany State and 24 in the win over Tuskegee—helping the Wildcats maintain their fourth-place standing in the east division.

SAVANNAH STATE

Savannah State (8-10, 6-8 SIAC), sixth in the east division, will host Benedict (4-17, 4-10 SIAC) on Saturday and Allen (5-13, 2-11 SIAC) on Monday. SSU will meet the Yellow Jackets for the first time this season and hope to secure a season split against Benedict following a 50-48 loss in January.

Last week, Savannah State went 1-1 in division play, outlasting Edward Waters 67-63 on Saturday and losing 65-59 at Morehouse on Monday.

Sophomore guard Michael Swift led all scorers with 17 points in the win over Edward Waters. Swift was followed by Ayjay Plain, Qua King and Javonte Landy, who paced Savannah State with 12 apiece at Morehouse.

Benedict, seventh in the east division, posted a 59-52 loss at Allen on Saturday. Junior guard Caleb Hymon paced the Tigers with 11 points in the contest.

Allen (5-13, 2-11 SIAC), will play Edward Waters (14-7, 10-4 SIAC) on Saturday and return to action Monday against Savannah State (8-10, 6-8 SIAC).

The Yellow Jackets picked up their second divisional win of the season in a 59-52 win over Benedict on Saturday. Allen’s momentum did not carry over, as it lost 72-54 at Clark Atlanta and fell 72-52 at Morehouse days later to remain at the bottom of the east division.

Junior guard Peyton Weathersby led the Yellow Jackets’ scoring with 28 points across the three contests.

MILES

Miles (17-3, 13-1 SIAC) will face Tuskegee (10-10, 8-6 SIAC) and Spring Hill (7-12, 5-9 SIAC) this week as they inch closer to securing the number one seed in the west. The Golden Bears defeated both teams in previous meetings, posting a 67-44 victory over Tuskegee and edging Spring Hill in an 83-80 overtime thriller at home.

Miles enters the week on an eight-game win streak—its longest of the season—after earning back-to-back victories over Lane and Oakwood (NAIA). The Golden Bears won 68-63 against Lane on Saturday and 87-75 over Oakwood on Tuesday.

Senior guard Alvin Miles led all scorers with 14 points against Lane, while Travarus Carroll turned in a game-high 25 in the win over Oakwood, helping Miles to remain atop the west division standings.

Tuskegee (10-10, 8-6 SIAC) will host  Miles (17-3, 13-1 SIAC) on Saturday and Lane (3-16, 3-11 SIAC) on Monday. Tuskegee lost 67-44 to Miles earlier this season and defeated Lane 51-50.

The Golden Tigers maintained their position at second in the west division after securing a 104-99 victory at Spring Hill on Saturday. Tuskegee wrapped up the week with a 66-65 road loss to Fort Valley State on Tuesday.

Senior guard Kevin Sesberry led the Golden Tigers with 59 points across the two games, matching a game-high 33 points at Spring Hill before leading all scorers with 26 at Fort Valley State. Sesberry was followed by SIAC Player of the Week Kusamae Draper, who finished with 46 points on the week.

CENTRAL STATE

Central State (11-10, 7-7 SIAC) will face LeMoyne-Owen (3-18, 3-11 SIAC) on the road this week. The Marauders secured an 86-69 win over the Magicians in January.

Central State climbed to third in the west division with a 91-85 win at Kentucky State on Saturday. The win marks the Marauders’ first win over the Thorobreds since 2020.

Junior guard Ramar Pryor led the Marauders’ scoring, matching a game-high 26 points in the victory and helping Central State extend its win streak to four.

LeMoyne-Owen Game History: 12-9 Central State (since 2012)

KENTUCKY STATE

Kentucky State (10-10, 7-8 SIAC) will face LeMoyne-Owen (3-18, 3-11 SIAC) in an evening road game this week. The Thorobreds defeated the Magicians 72-69 when the teams last met.

Kentucky State fell to Central State, 91-85, snapping its seven-game win streak in the series between the teams and slipping to fourth place in the west division standings.

Despite the loss, senior guard Lavar Miller Jr. and junior guard Aziel Blackwell led all scorers with matched game-highs of 26 points apiece.

Spring Hill suffered a 104-99 overtime loss to Tuskegee last week, coming in at fifth in the west division. Senior guard Walter Peggs Jr. matched a game-high 33 points in the contest.

Lane enters the week on a three-game skid, hoping to improve its sixth in the west division following a 68-63 loss to Miles last week. Junior point guard Rico Sain II led the Dragons’ scoring with 13 points in the contest.

LeMoyne-Owen’s win drought continued last week in a 70-69 loss to Rust (NAIA) on the road. Sophomore guard Khalil Genwright led all scorers with 19 points in the contest, followed by Richard Lowe, who contributed 15.
