Benedict's Washington Finishes Fifth at NCAA DII Outdoor Championship, Named All-American

PUEBLO, Colo. — Benedict College's Zack Washington finished fifth in the men's long jump at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday night, earning All-American honors.
 
Washington jumped 7.55 meters on his first attempt, then fouled on his second jump. On his third attempt, he jumped 7.61 meters (24 feet, 11 ¾ inches), a personal best. He fouled on his fourth attempt, and had jumps of 7.21 meters and 7.56 meters on his final two attempts.
 
Washington entered the national championship ranked 22nd overall.
 
Alex Meyer of Indianapolis won the event with a jump of 7.70 meters (25 feet, 3 ¼ inches) on his first jump.

Also on Thursday night, Benedict's men's 4x100-meter relay team competed in the first round of that event. Benedict's team of Zion JonesMatthew PaulJavel BestDarian Clarke finished seventh out of eight in their heat, and 13th out of 16 overall with a personal-best time of 40.46.
 
The relay team earned second-team All-American honors with their finish.
 
Benedict's Jada David will compete in the women's triple jump finals at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
