Edward Waters University is celebrating a significant achievement as senior guard
Ja'Kobe Williams has been selected to participate in the third annual HBCU All-Star Dream Classic, an event celebrating the top talent from Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
The event will take place Saturday, Aug. 9, at the historic Rucker Park in Harlem, New York. The women’s game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 6:30 p.m.
The HBCU All-Star Dream Classic, held at the iconic Holcombe Rucker Park in Harlem, brings together 40 of the best men's and women's basketball players from nearly 30 HBCUs, including institutions from the SIAC, CIAA, MEAC, SWAC, and NAIA conferences. The event not only highlights athletic prowess but also celebrates the rich cultural heritage of HBCUs.
Williams' selection is a testament to his outstanding performance during the 2024-25 season. Leading the Tigers in assists with an average of 5.0 per game, he also contributed 15.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, demonstrating his versatility on the court . His defensive skills were notable as well, averaging 2.0 steals per game, ranking him second on the team.
Williams also finished 15th in the SIAC in scoring, sixth in assists, 17th in rebounds and ninth in steals while registering the seventh minutes per game in the conference. He was named SIAC Newcomer of the Week once while recording six games with 20 or more points.
The HBCU All-Star Dream Classic serves as a platform to showcase the talents of HBCU student-athletes, providing them with exposure and opportunities to advance their careers. Williams' participation underscores the caliber of talent present at Edward Waters University and highlights the institution's commitment to excellence in athletics.
This event is expected to continue breaking barriers within the history of HBCU. In addition to showcasing incredibly talented student-athletes, Divine 9 step shows, cheerleaders, youth bands performances and school supply gift boxes will highlight the full experience of the HBCU All-Star Dream Classic.
As Williams prepares to represent EWU on this national stage, the university community extends its congratulations and support, celebrating this milestone in his athletic career.
