Kentucky State Men's Track and Field Finishes Second and Women's Places Third at Cedarville Collegiate Invite

CEDARVILLE, Ohio — The Kentucky State University indoor track and field teams finished the Cedarville Collegiate Invite with 39 top-10 finishes, leading to a second-place finish for the men and a third-place finish for the women.
 
Host Cedarville won both the men's and women's team titles, while SIAC rival Central State's women's team finished second the men's team finishing third. 
 
In the field events, Shamond McClain finished second, breaking the men's triple jump meet record of 13.81 meters set in 2009 with a jump of 48 feet, 6.75 inches. He held the meet record briefly before Josh Paul of Cedarville set a new record with a jump of 48 feet, 7.25 inches.
 
In addition to the second-place finish, the Thorobreds added seven top-three finishes. In the women's weight throw, Desire Poole finished second with a throw of 37 feet, 0.25 inches. Her teammate Andrew Bownes finished third with a throw of 43 feet, 4.25 inches.
 
A second-place finish was secured by Dewayne Davis in the men's shot put with a distance of 44 feet, 10.25 inches. Success continued in the men's pole vault, as Gedeon Kaponga cleared a height of 14 feet, 4.25 inches.
 
In the men's long jump, McClain finished second with a jump of 21 feet, 11 inches, while teammate Donte Rucker took third with a distance of 21 feet, 3.25 inches. Their event mate Jaaliyah Biggers took second in the women's long jump, clearing 17 feet, 8.25 inches.
 
The relays proved to be a highlight in the track events. The women's 4x200 relay team of Zhakeya HawkinsTahja Mims, Bailiy Graham and Biggers took first with a time of 1:48.23. The Thorobreds' second relay team—Taylor, Iyanna Thompson-Carter, Spears and Armoni Glenn—finished third in 1:57.95.
 
The men's 4x200 relay brought home first with a time of 1:32.44, run by Tayonne Turner, Jaelen GriffinErnest Chambers and Kyon Stephenson. The women's team rounded out the strong relay performance with a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay, posting a time of 4:15.76 behind Hawkins, Hollis, Mims and Graham.
