Kentucky State Rolls Past Miles 46-0 in Dominant SIAC Victory

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentucky State set the tone on its opening possession and never looked back, using an explosive offensive performance and two defensive touchdowns to cruise past Miles College 46-0 Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Thorobreds (5-2, 4-1 SIAC) scored on their first drive, built a 22-point halftime advantage and erupted for 21 points in a span of 3:26 during the third quarter to put the game out of reach. Kentucky State finished with 431 yards of total offense and forced four turnovers while holding the Golden Bears (3-4, 3-2 SIAC) scoreless in front of 2,748 fans.

Kentucky State wasted little time establishing momentum. After beginning its opening possession at its own 43-yard line, the Thorobreds marched 57 yards in five plays, capped by a 19-yard touchdown run from junior Aiyon Carter. Sophomore Leland Gantz added the extra point to give Kentucky State a 7-0 lead with 12:55 remaining in the first quarter.

The Thorobreds continued to move the football throughout the opening period but were unable to add to their advantage, taking a seven-point lead into the second quarter.

Kentucky State broke through again early in the second period, capitalizing on a Miles punt to extend its lead. Starting at their own 26-yard line, the Thorobreds moved into Golden Bears territory behind a 13-yard rush from junior quarterback Juan Gainous and an ensuing 15-yard face-mask penalty. On the following play, junior Cam Tucker connected with sophomore Joshua Thomas Jr. for a 46-yard touchdown strike. Junior Justin Cox converted the two-point attempt, pushing the Kentucky State advantage to 15-0 with 12:05 left before halftime.

The Thorobreds added another touchdown late in the half, putting together a nine-play, 78-yard drive that consumed 4:41. Senior Tray Blackmon Jr. capped the possession with a six-yard touchdown run on third down, extending the lead to 22-0 with 2:29 remaining in the second quarter.

Kentucky State carried that momentum into the locker room, having held Miles off the scoreboard through the first 30 minutes.
After a scoreless opening stretch of the second half, the Thorobreds regained their offensive rhythm midway through the third quarter.

Taking over at their own 46-yard line, Kentucky State needed just four plays to cover 54 yards. Senior quarterback Denim Johnson connected with senior wide receiver Jaden Hale for a 30-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 29-0 with 8:56 remaining in the period.
From there, Kentucky State's defense took center stage.

Less than two minutes later, senior defensive back Roman Hernandez intercepted a pass from Miles quarterback Brinley Vandiver and returned it 58 yards for a touchdown. The defensive score stretched Kentucky State's advantage to 36-0 with 6:56 remaining in the third quarter.

The Thorobreds struck again just 1:26 later. Junior linebacker Lensley Dieujuste picked off Miles quarterback Anthony Mix and raced 35 yards for another touchdown, giving Kentucky State a commanding 43-0 lead with 5:30 left in the period.

The back-to-back interception returns highlighted a decisive third-quarter surge in which Kentucky State scored 21 unanswered points and effectively put the contest away.

With the outcome firmly in hand, the Thorobreds turned to their ground game in the fourth quarter. Kentucky State opened the period with an eight-play, 41-yard drive that consumed 4:33 before Gantz connected on a 34-yard field goal with 10:17 remaining to make it 46-0.

Miles threatened to break the shutout late in the fourth quarter, driving 78 yards in 13 plays and advancing to the Kentucky State 2-yard line. The Thorobreds' defense held firm, however, recovering a fumble with 2:11 remaining to preserve the shutout.

Gainous led Kentucky State's balanced offensive effort, completing 14 of 21 passes for 153 yards while adding a game-high 73 rushing yards on six carries, including a 48-yard run.

Senior wide receiver Darius Cyprian provided the biggest spark through the air, finishing with seven receptions for 126 yards, highlighted by a 72-yard catch. Hale added three receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown, while Thomas Jr. recorded two catches for 43 yards and a score.

Kentucky State totaled 199 rushing yards and 232 passing yards, averaging 7.1 yards per play.

Defensively, junior Kendrick Curry led the Thorobreds with six tackles, while Hernandez and senior Lawrence McConnell finished with five apiece. Hernandez added an interception and fumble recovery, while McConnell forced a fumble and recorded a pass breakup. Freshman Bryson Ellington contributed a sack, and junior Micheal Daniels also recovered a fumble.

The Thorobreds limited Miles to 73 passing yards and forced the Golden Bears into 21 incompletions on 31 attempts. Miles finished with 274 yards of offense but failed to convert either of its two fourth-down attempts.

Kentucky State's special teams unit also contributed to the win, with Gantz finishing 5-for-5 on extra-point attempts while adding a field goal and five touchbacks on kickoffs.

The Thorobreds will remain at home as they host Lane on Saturday, Oct. 17 for Frankfort and Military appreciation Day. Kickoff is schedule for 1 p.m.
