GULF SHORES, Ala. – The
Spring Hill College softball team posted 12 runs Friday against Gulf South Conference competition at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. In the end, the Badgers went 2-1 on the day with wins over Valdosta State and Union and a loss to West Alabama.
SPRING HILL 3, VALDOSTA STATE 2
Meredith Fontenot knocked in the first two runs of the season, using a homer to left center to bring in
Jesslyn Gordon and go up 2-0 in the bottom of the first.
Later in the fifth inning, VSU struck back with some clutch base running as Jayme Prandine scored on a wild pitch and Charlotte Phillips scored on a muffed throw, tying the game at 2-2.
The Badgers took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth when
Amanda Glowacki scored from third as
Oscha Carter reached on a fielder's choice.
Abigail Christ finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a double. Fontenot went 1-for-3 with the two-run homer and a run scored.
Kayla Coley-Drayton stole a base.
Bethany Ahrens (1-0) threw a complete game, striking out three, walking six, and allowing an earned run.
SPRING HILL 3, UNION 0
Meadow Villar blasted a two-RBI single to center field, knocking in Gordon and
Janci Aube for a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
Villar grabbed another RBI with a double to left center as Gordon scored crossed home to move up 3-0 in the fifth.
Gordon led a 10-hit effort from the Badgers, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Villar finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a double. Fontenot and Detiny Pierce both went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Leighanna Turk (1-0) pitched all seven innings and struck out a batter. She surrendered five hits in the shutout performance.
WEST ALABAMA 7, SPRING HILL 6
For the third consecutive game, SHC struck first, this time with a double down the left field line from
Destiny Pierceto bring in Vollar and Gordon. However, UWA answered with a homer in the bottom of the first to tie the contest at 2-2.
Spring Hill reclaimed the lead in the second and went up 3-2 after Christ scored on a wild pitch.
After the UWA Tigers scored a run in the third to tie the game, action picked up in the fourth.
Aube notched a two-RBI single as Carter and Christ came around to score, putting the Badgers ahead 5-3. Unfortunately, West Alabama answered with three runs, capped by a two-RBI single from Haley Shannon, and gave the Tigers a 6-5 lead.
UWA added a run in the sixth for a 7-5 lead. In the seventh, Aube singled to the shortstop as Coley-Drayton scored to cut the score to 7-6. However, the comeback effort ended there, and the Badgers suffered a 7-6 loss.
Aube was electric at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort, including three RBIs and a walk. Christ, Gordon, and Carter, who had a double, each collected two hits. Pierce finished with 1-for-3 with the RBI double.
Emma Curry (0-1) pitched four innings and struck out three batters, while allowing eight hits, six earned runs, and two walks. Turk threw two innings of relief duty and finished with three walks and an earned run.
Spring Hill will have an off day Saturday before returning to action Sunday morning with scheduled contests against Florida Tech and Rogers State.
