SIAC Women's Basketball Weekly Honors: Feb. 24

ATLANTA — The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its Women's Basketball Players of the Week on Tuesday, Feb. 24, honoring student-athletes for impressive performances in games played last week. Amelya Hatch (Edward Waters) and Samarian Franklin (Miles) were recognized.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK – AMELYA HATCH, EDWARD WATERS UNIVERSITY

Hatch had an impressive week for Edward Waters as the Lady Tigers captured the SIAC East Division title. EWU extended its win streak to 14 consecutive games with road victories over Benedict, No. 21 Miles and Tuskegee to close out the SIAC regular season. Hatch averaged 15.0 points and 2.6 rebounds while shooting 60 percent (15-for-25) from the field, 71.4 percent (5-for-7) from 3-point range and 91 percent (10-for-11) from the free-throw line in 24.3 minutes per game in a reserve role. Her scoring helped keep the Lady Tigers' win streak alive. She scored 17 points and four rebounds on 6-for-10 shooting and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in 23 minutes in a 51-43 win over Benedict. Hatch followed with 12 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal while shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in a 60-52 road win over No. 21 Miles. In the regular-season finale, Hatch led the Lady Tigers with 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting in a 53-41 win over Tuskegee.

NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK – SAMARIAN FRANKLIN, MILES COLLEGE

Franklin averaged 12.3 points, 10 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 1.0 steals as the Lady Bears went 2-1 during the week. In a victory over Spring Hill, Franklin recorded a career-high 16 assists while adding nine points and two steals. The performance marked the most assists in school annals, the most in a single game by an SIAC student-athlete in more than 15 years and the second-most in NCAA Division II this season. Franklin also scored 19 points in a loss to Edward Waters, matching her second-highest scoring output of the season.
