FRANKFORT, Ky. — The
Benedict College baseball team extended their winning streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep over
Kentucky State on Saturday.
Benedict won the first game 13-7 after scoring seven runs in the eighth inning. The Tigers scored nine runs in the second inning and went on to take a 20-13 victory in the second game.
The Tigers improved to 7-3 overall and 5-3 in the SIAC. KSU falls to 0-13 overall and 0-8 in the SIAC.
Benedict hit five home runs in the first game, with
Jaquez Akins,
Kent Johnson,
Joshua Medina,
Cameron Haley and
Jonathan Olmedo all blasting shots out of the park. Akins hit a grand slam in the eighth inning. Johnson and Medina had solo shots in the seven-run eighth inning.
Anthony Ramos (1-1) picked up the win on the mound in relief. He worked three innings, giving up two hits and one run.
Johnson had two more home runs in the second game – a solo shot in the first inning and a two-run blast in the sixth inning. Haley also put two more out of the park – a two-run homer in the third inning and a solo in the fifth inning.
Benedict built a 14-5 lead after three innings, but Kentucky State battled back to cut the lead to 15-13 after five innings. Johnson's two-run homer came in the sixth, and
Colin Jones drove in a pair of runs with a single to make it 19-13.
Starter
Adam Zendejas (2-0) earned the win on the mound.
Benedict and Kentucky State will wrap up their series with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
