Cunningham Wins Tournament as Morehouse Finishes Second at Savannah State Invitational

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Morehouse golf team turned in one of its strongest outings of the spring, finishing second at the Savannah State Tigers Spring Invitational at Crosswinds Golf Course in Savannah. The Maroon Tigers posted a three-round team score of 46-over par, trailing only Christian Brothers (34-over) and finishing ahead of Savannah State, Johnson C. Smith, Mars Hill, Bowie State, Central State and Fisk in the eight-team field. Morehouse stayed in the hunt throughout the event with round scores of 17-over, 6-over and 23-over. J.D. CUnningham brought home honors, winning the individual tournament via a playoff.

Morehouse was powered by a pair of outstanding individual performances at the top of the leaderboard. Tyler Stackhouse tied for first at 5-over-par 221 after rounds of 72, 73 and 76, while J.D. Cunningham matched him at 221 with rounds of 76, 69 and 76 to give the Maroon Tigers a share of medalist honors. That one-two punch gave Morehouse two of the top three finishers in the tournament and helped keep steady pressure on the field from start to finish.

The Maroon Tigers also got a solid contribution from Izaiah Stewart, who tied for 12th at 18-over 234, and Kip Banks Jr., who finished 35th at 56-over 272.

For Morehouse, the finish was another encouraging sign for a young group that continues to show front-end scoring power. Putting two golfers in a tie for first and placing second as a team on the road is the kind of result that should give the Maroon Tigers momentum heading into their next event, the Alabama A&M Men's Collegiate Invitational on March 23-24 in Hampton, Georgia.
