Savannah State Rallies Past Kentucky State

GARDENDALE, Ala.Savannah State snapped their five game losing skid with a 8-7 win over Kentucky State on Wednesday afternoon in the SIAC Crossover at Bill Noble Park.

With the score tied at 7, Savannah State scored the winning run in the sixth inning.

Ambria Guye led off the bottom of the sixth with a single but was thrown out when Jayla Alexander reached base on a fielder's choice. When Madison Starling-Martin reached base because of a fielding error, Alexander advanced to third and a groundout by Aariana Battle allowed Alexander to come home with would be the game winning run.

The Thorobreds had runners in scoring position in the top of the seventh but were unable to score.

Kentucky State sent four runners across home plate in the top of the first to take the early lead and increased their advantage to 5-0 in the top of the third.

SSU responded with five runs of their own in the bottom of the third.

Milani DunningKaitlyn Williams and Guye all drew walks to load the bases for Alexander who reached base on an error by the shortstop which allowed Dunning and Williams to score. The next batter, Starling-Martin, singled to left field and that brought home Alexander and Guye. After Battle reached base on a fielder's choice and Neveah Ford drew a walk to re-load the bases, Donnea Allen reached base on a fielder's choice and that sent home Starling-Martin to tie the game at 5-5.

Both teams sent two runners across home plate in the fifth inning.

With KSU ahead 7-5, Battle and Jayla Givens both hit singles and scored on a single to right field by Dunning to knot the game at 7-7.

Dunning and Starling-Martin both drove in two runs for SSU while Jayla Givens had two hits and Jayla Alexander scored twice.

Allen, who struck out six, earned the win on the mound.

Savannah State (14-8, 5-5 SIAC) will wrap up the SIAC Crossover on March 12 with games against LeMoyne-Owen and Miles.
