Baseball: Benedict 17, Kentucky State 14
TUSCALOOSA, Ala.—Benedict’s Sydney Bouke-Night drove in two clutch RBIs and pitched five full innings of relief to help give his team a 17-14 win over Kentucky State in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s tournament opening round game.
Benedict, the third-seed in the east, scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and added two runs in each of the final four innings of play.
Benedict will play the eastern division’s number two-seed, Paine College, tomorrow at 10:00a.m. at Northridge High School.
Benedict’s DeShawn Brooks was 3-for-4 with six RBIs on the day, while teammate Alexander Harvey went 3-for-6 with two runs scored.
Baseball: Clark-Atlanta 20, Tuskegee 17
TUSCALOOSA, Ala.—Its not often a pitcher can give up 11 runs in a game and pick-up the win, but Clark-Atlanta’s Brendon Larkin was an exception to the rule on Wednesday.
Larkin’s effectiveness in six innings was enough to give his Clark-Atlanta team a 20-16 win against Tuskegee in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s opening game.
Larkin’s 11 runs, eight earned, was hardly the highlight of his day. His 3-for-5 outing at the plate, including four RBIs and four runs scored, however, was. Clean-up man Cleveland Brownlee had a big day at the dish also. Brownlee finished 3-for-4 with eight RBIs, three of which coming off of a mammoth first inning three runs homer.
CAU will face west number one-seed Stillman in Thursday’s second round action at 10:00a.m. Tuskegee will await its next opponent in the loser’s bracket of tomorrow’s second-round games.
Baseball: LeMoyne-Owen 20, Lane 6
TUSCALOOSA, Ala.—LeMoyne-Owen scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to help secure a spot in tomorrow’s second round action after defeating Lane 20-6 at in Wednesday’s first round Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament action.
LOC’s offensive output was more than enough run support for Chris Walton to work with. Walton pitched seven complete innings allowing only six hits and three earned runs.
LOC will face-off with the eastern division’s number-one seeded Albany State, Thursday at 10:00a.m. at Central High School. Lane will have to wait until the early part of the afternoon on Thursday to proceed in its loser’s bracket match-up with either Stillman or Clark-Atlanta.
Junior catcher Otis Shaffer was 1-for-2 with three RBIs for LOC; while also scoring three runs in the game. Kerry White went 2-for-3 with three RBIs of his own to go along with four runs scored.
Baseball: Miles 11, Morehouse 4
Tuscaloosa, Ala.—Miles used two pitchers and was aided by the bat of Steven Kennedy as it went on to defeat Morehouse 11-4 in the final game of Wednesday’s first-round action.
Miles Adam Smith earned the win, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs. Matthew Roberts picked-up the save pitching the final 4.2 innings of relief, while allowing no runs in the process.
Kennedy went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Miles scored in each of the game’s first four innings to, seemly putting it out of reach before Morehouse could score in the top of the fifth.
Miles will go on to play to winner of tomorrow’s LeMoyne-Owen and Albany State game at 7:00p.m. on Thursday.
