SIAC SPRING SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIPS
MEN’S & WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD DAY 2 RECAP
Tuscaloosa, AL – The track and field competition during the SIAC Championships heated up with fast times, big throws and huge jumps in the second day of competition building up a suspenseful day of Finals on Saturday and another great Heptathlon and Decathlon points race.
In the Women’s action Jasmine Peck and Estella Moore of Albany State continued their 1, 2 punch qualifying for the 200m finals in their usual 1st and 2nd place respectively. In the 800m Robin Thomas of Albany State cruised to a easy victory and a #1 seed in the finals with a 2:24:32 time. Irene Chepkoech of Benedict College took home a first place finish in the 10,000m run with a time of 42:05:34 just two minutes off her personal best of the season. Asia Hollingsworth and Erica Adams of Albany State took home 2nd and 3rd place in the 10,000m respectively. In the 400m hurdles Lindsay Colclough shaved two seconds off her best of the season to take the #1 qualifying seed going into the finals. Albany State’s 4x100m relay team ran their fastest time of the year became a automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships when they ran 45.21 in the prelims. Benedict College also ran their fastest time of the year with a 47.00 setting up a very fast finals round of prelims.
In the Women’s Field events Petra McDonald of Benedict College took home the SIAC crown and an provisional qualifying mark in the Long Jump with a jump of 5.80m followed by Jana Mrozkova (SIAC Field Athlete of the Year) of Albany State finished 2nd. Last Year’s Field Athlete of the Year Shannon Armbrister of ASU won the Shot Put with a throw of 13.81m also giving her a provisional qualifying mark. Arianne McLean of Fort Valley State took home a 1st place victory in the Hammer Throw with a throw of 37.53m. In the Heptathlon gained her personal best of the season scoring 4,356 points giving her the 1st place finish.
For the men, Brian Witherspoon of Stillman College continued his domination of the running events cruising to a #1 seed in the qualifying round of the men’s 200m with a time of 21.39. In the 800m David Osborne of Benedict College nearly ran his personal best with a time of 1:57.03 to take the #1 seed. Oneil Williams (SIAC Track Athlete of the Year) of Benedict College took home the 10,000m run championship with a time of 34:14.58. In the 400m intermediate hurdles Damain Prince of Morehouse College ran a time of 54.03 to become the #1 seed. And in the 4x100m Relay Albany State received the #1 seed for the finals after running a 40.37 in the prelims.
In the men’s field events Jeff Nweke of Fort Valley State took home 1st place in the Shot Put with a throw of 14.92m. In the Hammer Throw Billy Wooten of Morehouse College took home 1st place honors with his throw of 44.28m. In the men’s Decathlon Pierre Brown of Fort Valley State won in a close race scoring 6746.
