SIAC SPRING SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIPS
MEN’S & WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD DAY 3 RECAP
Tuscaloosa, AL – The third day of the SIAC Track & Field Championships saw Albany State women and Morehouse men take a commanding lead in the race for the SIAC Championship. The days action also saw a few wrinkles and unexpected surprises as one of the key runners for ASU, Jasmine Peck did not advance to the finals after being eliminated in the prelims.
In women’s track action Estella Moore (ASU) and Lindsay Colclough (BC) advanced to the finals in the 100m with the top times of the day 11.72 and 11.97 respectively. SIAC favorite Jasmine Peck was disqualified from the event after she false started eliminating her from the competition. In the 400m Andrele Kelly of Clark Atlanta posted the fastest prelim time of 57.60 giving her the #1 seed going into Saturday’s finals.
In the women’s field events Lakesha Bell (PC) took home the victory in the High Jump with a jump of 1.62m. In the Triple Jump SIAC Field Athlete of the Year, Jana Mrozkova (ASU) jumped 12.25m to take home a first place finish. In the Discus, Saisha Woodward of Fort Valley State out threw favorite Shannon Armbrister to take home the SIAC crown with a throw of 40.46m.
In men’s track action Brian Witherspoon continued his supremacy in the 100m advancing to the finals with a time of 10.28 seconds. In the 400m Morehouse’s Damian Prince ran 47.75 to qualify for the finals. Prince will be joined by two other Morehouse men in the finals including Branden Hartley and Curtis Dayson. Oneil Williams of Benedict qualified for the finals with the #1 time of 4:15.84 in the 1500m. In the 110 Hurdles Fresham Ronnie McGirt of Albany State posted the fastest time of 14.43 to advance to the finals.
In the field events for the men Keith Moffat of Morehouse high jumped 2.03m to win the High Jump. Moffat defeated Evan Flax who also jumped 2.03m as he (Moffat) reached the mark in fewer jumps. In the Triple Jump Morehouse finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Evan Flax finished in first with a jump of 15.02m, Randall Flimmons jumped 15.00m to finish in 2nd, and Barry Batson jumped 14.57m to finalize the top three. Corey Ray of Albany State took home the SIAC Crown in the Discus with his throw of 45.67m.
